Highlights of Instruction

  • Full distance learning for all students during first semester (August 31, 2020 – January

29, 2021)

  • Reassessed on December 1, 2020
  • a. February 1, 2021 – families choose between hybrid or distance learning:

i. Hybrid

  • 1. The two-day hybrid model allows for a 50% split by last names:
  • 2. A - J
  • 3. K - Z
  • ii. Distance Learning – at-home and fully virtual
  • For the first semester in full distance learning, All schools will operate during their

regularly scheduled hours.

  • Special Education teachers will continue to service students based on IEPs and 504s.
  • ESOL teachers will continue to provide language support services on a regularly

scheduled basis.

Highlights of Instruction

  • Teachers have the option to report to their respective school sites Monday -

Friday.

  • PreK-12 teachers will participate in professional development on technology,

social and emotional learning, and curricular documents during the pre- service days of August 20-28, 2020.

  • Friday, August 28, 2020 – Virtual Orientation/Mock Day for all schools
  • Chromebooks for students Grades 1 through 12; iPads for PreK and K will

be distributed to students in August.

Highlights of School Facilities

Meals

  • All schools will serve as meal distribution sites.
  • Meals will be pre-packaged and distributed two days per week.
  • Monday – meals for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday
  • Thursday – meals for Thursday and Friday
  • Students will pick up meals from the location closest to their home;

buses will deliver meals to communities more than 1.5 miles from school.

Highlights of Student Activities

Athletics

  • We will follow guidelines provided by our local health department, medical professionals and Maryland

Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) for progression through each phase.

  • When distance learning is in effect, all athletic activities are cancelled.

Creative and Performing Arts Performances

  • Virtual Performances

– Pre-Recorded Performances

  • Performances can be pre-recorded and edited using technology before presenting to

parents. – Live Virtual Performances

  • Using digital platforms such as YouTube Live to stream performances.

Dual Enrollment

  • Virtual format for both synchronous and asynchronous courses

Field Trips, Clubs, Activities

  • Conduct virtual field trips
  • Clubs and organizations provide online activities for students

Highlights of Student Services

  • Crisis support for schools due to staff/student loss will occur via Zoom and

telehealth.

  • Virtual guidance lessons will be provided by Professional School Counselors.
  • Clinical mental health providers will provide ongoing counseling, student
  • bservations, and parent and administrator consultation.
  • Virtual elections will be held for Student Government.
  • Virtual college exploration and application opportunities will be available.

Equity through Distance Learning

  • Expanded internet services in high-poverty communities
  • Chromebooks or iPads to students to enable ALL students access to distance learning

  • Provide resources to support English Language Learners and students with disabilities

through grade appropriate engaging instructional materials that address their unique learning and language needs

  • Continuation of our meal programs, receiving breakfast and lunch at all school sites
  • Professional development to staff on social and emotional health for students
  • For the first three weeks of school, an emphasis will be placed on content, skills and/or

processes aligned to the curriculum which were to be implemented during the fourth quarter of the 2019-2020 school year and will lay the foundation for instruction for students during the 2020-2021 school year.

  • We will establish Parent Centers that are strategically located throughout the school

system in order to provide support and resources to parents and guardians.

Next Steps

  • With community and staff input we are making revisions weekly in the DRAFT Recovery

Guide, which will be reposted every Friday with an alert to parents and staff. The draft will be considered final on August 14, 2020, for final MSDE review.
