The Current Situation

  • Canfor Pulp is developing concepts for a water cleaning process on its property

adjacent to the existing water intake for the Intercon and Prince George Pulp and Paper Mills

  • This is a project to remove sediment from the water that we bring into the mills from

the Nechako River.

  • This sediment impacts product quality, damages equipment and makes the water

unsuitable for potable purposes.

The Current Situation

  • At this point this is only a project concept.
  • In order for Canfor Pulp to Consider the most technically feasible option for a project

we require permission to use land in the ALR for a non-agricultural use.

  • This step is an important “gate” and will influence whether it is worth while to install this

water cleaning process

What We Are Asking For

  • Permission to use our land for a non agricultural

use.

  • We DO NOT want to take this land out of the

ALR.

  • We want to avoid putting assets in riparian areas.
  • Business certainty.

What We Want To Do

  • Install a state of the art water treatment plant consisting of a

clarification system and a sediment decanting pond.

This will allow us to:

  • Have clean water all year round
  • Avoid scheduling maintenance outages around the “dirty water season”
  • Achieve better environmental standards and product quality throughout their

production process.

  • reduce energy costs, decrease water use, improve product quality, improve

the treatment of effluent by increasing the treatment time of the effluent, and reduce overall effluent volumes released to the river.

  • There will be similar predicted benefits to the other users of this water.

Some users rely on groundwater wells when water quality from the Nechako

  • degrades. With a stable source of clean water, it is expected that less water

will be drawn from the aquifers in this area.
