Introduction

  • Network management encompasses activities, methods,

procedures and tools that pertain to operation, administration, maintenance and provisioning of network devices

  • Network management is challenging !
  • Standards have evolved (far too many like IETF, ITU, ISO, Object

Management Group, Multi Service Switching Forum……)

  • BARC & CDAC Collaboration
  • Requirement from NKN (for indigenous Network Management

System

slide-3
SLIDE 3

Objective

  • Develop a generic multilevel hierarchical NMS conforming to

standards in open source platform

  • Develop suitable interfaces for the NMS to interact with the

indigenous initiatives such as

The Network security product - Secure Network Access System (SNAS) Integrated Threat Management Appliance, (ITMA), by Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL) and Society for Electronic Transactions and Security (SETS).

  • Should support SNMP v1/v2/v3, FCAPS, MPLS Management etc.

Too many standards for comfort !

General view of all standards is that all models should support the following functions : Fault Management Configuration Management Accounting Management Performance Management Security management

PRABANDH-NMS Functional Modules

  • Fault management: Detect, notify and analyze faults encountered

in the network

  • Configuration management: Configuration file and software

management

  • Accounting management: Collect and analyze usage information of

network resources

  • Performance management: Monitor and measure various aspects
  • f performance so that overall performance can be maintained at a

defined level

  • Security management: Secure access to network devices, network

resources and services to authorized individuals

PRABANDH-NMS Functional Modules continued ..

  • Discovery: Discover network devices and topology
  • Log management: captures, store and analyze logs generated by

various network devices

  • User Interface: Provides an user interface through which user can

manage the whole network.

  • Resource Management: Manages resources present in the network
  • Help Desk: This module helps network user to log a problem in the

system

Secure channel

1.This module intercepts message in encrypts/decrypts it before sending to corresponding PRABNDH Server 2.Supports both pre-shared as well as certificate based authentication 3.This is helpful if PRABANDH-NMS in deployed in distributed manner 4.Encryption module can be enabled/disabled using a configuration parameter 5.This module is generic in nature and can be used for other applications as well

…..

  • 1. In two level deployment scenario the level 1

NMS will collect data from network devices

  • 2. The level 1 NMSs will push the

aggregated/summarized data to top level NMS

  • ver secure link.
  • 3. In case of any failure in level 1 NMS, the other

NMS at the same level can be configured to collect data from the network devices earlier attached to the failed NMS.
