Data Flows

• Traps are sent by SNMP (pushed) by the NMS (not the node)
• Traps are correlated in HPOpenViewSD
• Correlation is custom created by 3rd party
• Performance data is stored on the nodes
• Not pollable by a standard nor a propietary MIB
• Workaround implemented:
• PM is periodically polled through FTP

NMS in the CFT

• NOC was chosen at the same time of the procurement of the optical

equipment

• Integration of Optical monitoring was a scored requirement in the

initial CFT of optical equipmeent

• Chicken vs Egg problem for non-integrators
• Result: integration of the optical equipment into the NOC was the

decisive factor for assigning the current NOC

• Added benefit: the 2nd-3rd line optical support is the same company

as the NOC, no more ping-pong

NOC & DWDM systems

• 2nd & 3rd line have the same view we have
• Incident management is outsourced up until 3rd line
• Change management is done by us
• Training is not trivial, DWDM is indeed another country (another

world is going too far)

• Documentation was slightly harder than usual
• no concept of backbone links in the CRM
• yet another addition to our “CMDB” was needed
• impact analysis is done by us, but is easily achieved through the

NMS

Conclusions

• Another party == another layer of delay / documentation /

responsibility

• The polling mechanism of Layer 2-3 are getting installed into Layer 1

but don’t take this for granted

• Documentation and inventory have to be foreseen / harder to

integrate afterwards

• DWDM world and IP world are slowly integrating. Some technologies

can greatly influence the way we think about NMS’es, Optical Change Mgmt, ...

• OTN / GMPLS flavors
• integration between Layer 3 and Layer 1 (Juniper & Adva)
• Others ?
