It is important that an artist influences or inspires work. Although you may make ‘copies’ of their work it then needs to be developed. Consider how the work is presented in your sketchbook. The example here is an artist research page based on Henry Moore.

This example is based on the artist Jonathan Darby. He tends to use a smooth painting technique with a rough, often textured/ collaged background. You can be imaginative and create your own backgrounds.

This a students sketchbook response to ‘Distortion’. There are many artists looking at this in different ways. For example, Jenny Saville, Wes Naman, Francis Bacon. Get creative, use elastic bands, cling film, sellotape. You can also get a member of your family with their face squashed up at a window.

Following on from the previous slide (and possibly inspired by the work of artist Jenny Saville). This example is monochromatic. It could be done using pencil/ tonal technique or watercolours would also work well. It could be based on ‘selfies’ taken at strange angles. Remember to keep any photos safe in a folder to be printed out later and go in sketchbook.

Remember that 25% of your final grade for GCSE Art comes from written work. It is important that you show your understanding of artists work. Why have you chosen a particular artist? How can you use their technique to develop your own work? What were they inspired by? There are many guides to help with sketchbook annotation, I have added some to my Pinterest.
