  9. CONSIDERATIONS • We believe it is important to provide after-school activities for our middle school students. It is a valuable educational experience that is an extension of the school day. • School-sponsored team activities are predominantly coached by licensed teachers. Their coaching philosophy is aligned with our overall school district activities values. • It allows students to participate in a team sport without the association level of cost or time commitment.

  10. CONSIDERATIONS • We have always offered school basketball, softball and baseball as co-curricular activities and it has been a positive experience for many students. • Practicing and competing in a sport every day can only help a player’s skill development.

  11. CONSIDERATIONS • Many school districts are not committed to offering a high quality experience for their middle school student athletes. There have been problems during the season with cancelling games on short notice, and no attempt to reschedule games. • It is becoming more difficult to find enough schools to fill out a game schedule. Many school districts have eliminated middle school team sports from their Activities Program. • The caliber of school competition has declined. Many players from other schools play only traveling and do not participate on their school team.

  12. CONSIDERATIONS • There is duplication of offerings. Our local sport associations are providing quality experiences for players at all levels of ability. • 35 of 42 girls participate in both traveling and school basketball. 37 of 52 boys participate in both traveling and school basketball (22 of the 94 players participate on the school team only). • Similar to school sports, there is no cutting with the sport associations. Players are placed on teams based on skills and experience. There is equal playing time for players at every level of competition. • The traveling associations have reduced or waived registration fees for individuals in need.

  13. CONSIDERATIONS • We currently have a coaching shortage at the high school level. Fewer available coaching positions would help us fill positions for grades 9- 12. • The girls and boys high school basketball programs (grades 9-12) would be able to practice immediately after school at both the high school and middle school until 5:00 p.m. This would dramatically increase the number of practice hours for the middle school girls and boys that are on traveling basketball teams at both facilities.
