  2. DD program-expectations ● Well trained TAs in year 4,5 – Have already attended our courses ● Year long project-research quality work – Familiar environment – Solid foundation in the UG program – Familiarity with faculty interests

  3. DD vs. ext-BTech+MTech ● Familiar environment – No need for re-adaptation, re-learning basics ● Master's degree valued by industry – More specialized courses, less in house training ● 5 years instead of 6 for Master's degree – 1 year's salary(~4lakhs+) in opportunity cost

  4. DD vs. BTech ● Master's degree valued by industry – More specialized courses, less in house training ● 1 year extra, but – Salary difference ~ 0.5lakhs+ – More placement opportunities for DDs-You need to get the job in the first place!

  8. DD project ● 19 credits over 14 months – Summer: 2hr/credit/week * 19credits * 3months * 4weeks/month = 456hr (38 hr/week) – 9 th , 10 th sem: 1hr/credit/week * 19credits * 5months/sem * 2sem * 4weeks/month = 760hr (19 hr/week) – 1 month: goof off ● Total of 1216 hours

  9. DD project ● 1200+ hours – Learning about the project – Getting used to the tools – Exploratory work, dead ends – Work on the problem – Report writing ● Working for 1200 hours – Over 14 months: not difficult. – Over last one month: Impossible!

  10. Lower limit ● What's the absolute minimum? – 19 credits ~ 19 x 1 credit labs(=2.5hr/week*14 weeks) – Show up for 75% of 2.5hr lab classes ● 75% * 2.5hr/week/lab * 14 weeks * 19 labs = 498.75 hrs ● 500 hrs

  11. ME DD program ● Expectations unclear – Talk to the project/faculty advisor ● Socially isolated in 5 th year – BTechs leave after 4 years – Different hostels – Not much interactions with Mtechs ● “Better” students in Comm. – They have similar problems – MTechs from outside do better

  12. DD program ● DD = 3 yr. UG + 2 yr. PG ● 3 UG years – Mainly course oriented – Extra curricular activities ● Need to “think” like a PG from 4 th year – Professional attitude towards the project – Better time management – Interaction with MTechs
