Why did IAPO choose access to healthcare as the theme of the 6th Global Patients Congress?

  • Access is the number one key issue identified by our

members.

  • Universal health coverage is a priority area for the World

Health Organization (WHO) and Member States.

  • However, there is a lack of understanding of what UHC is

and how we get there.

  • The patient perceptive is key – as the recipient of

healthcare services so should have a say in how universal health coverage (UHC) is defined.

#GPC2014

“Universal health coverage is the single most powerful concept that public health has to offer.”

  • Margaret Chan, Director General, WHO

Universal coverage ensures that all people can use health services without financial hardship.

What is universal coverage?

Universal health coverage

Objectives of universal health coverage:

  • Equity in access to health services
  • High quality of health services
  • Financial-risk protection.

This requires:

  • A strong, efficient, well-run health system.
  • A system for financing health services.
  • Access to essential medicines and technologies.
  • A sufficient capacity of well-trained, motivated health

workers.

Message from Joshua Wamboga Magawa, of The AIDS Support Organisation (TASO) Uganda- on election to the IAPO Board

“Glory is to the Almighty God. I am humbled! Thank you the great IAPO team for working diligently to organize a successful 2014

  • congress. I am happy to join, learn, share experiences and in unison

advance and champion the patients agenda. IAPO has done and achieved a lot, and yet still, much more needs to be done to see a patient at the centre of health care across the globe. For now I am happy to know and I pledge my total commitment to the cause of IAPO as I have done before. To the entire congress, say thank you! The trust and confidence put in me is much appreciated and I believe it shall bear fruits Best Regards, Joshua” #GPC2014
