  3. WHAT IS ADVANCED PLACEMENT?  Sponsored by College Board and created by college professors  College level coursework completed at the high school level  Satisfies high school credit requirements as well as the credit requirements of many colleges at the same time

  4. BENEFITS OF AP COURSEWORK  Exposure to rigorous, college-level curriculum  Opportunity to earn college credit and/or advanced placement  Good predictor of college success  Enhanced college attractiveness  College tuition savings  Competitive edge for scholarship dollars

  5. AP VS. DUAL ENROLLMENT  Advanced Placement  Dual Enrollment • Ability to make up to 105 • Uses letter grading in the course (A=95 etc.) • Additional quality point • No additional quality added to GPA point added • Easier accessibility to the • Transportation is instructor student’s responsibility • Calendar follows school • Breaks are different schedule from FCBOE • Nationally recognized • Increase in poor curriculum grades and scores

AP GRADES & TRANSCRIPTS  5 points are added to semester grades in all AP classes, provided the student passed the class  Transcripts will include two grade point averages: • Unweighted GPA: Average of all grades accumulated in high school • Weighted GPA: Average with one quality point added per AP course

  7. AP EXPECTATIONS  Complete required summer reading and assignments  Remain in the class for a full year • No schedule changes at semester break for any reason (including dual enrollment conflict) • Signed contract required  Pay for and complete the AP Exam

  8. AP EXAMS  Standardized exam written by College Board given at end of course in May  Serves as the final exam for spring semester  Students are required to take the exam and pay exam fees (currently $92 per exam)  AP Tests are graded on a scale of 1-5  Score of 3, 4, or 5 signifies that the student is qualified to receive college credit (check with individual schools for specifics) • 3: Qualified to receive college credit • 4: Well-Qualified to receive college credit • 5: Extremely Well-Qualified to receive college credit

  10. QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES  This is not a competitive process between students  Teachers try to predict success by accepting students who show promise of success in the class. The goal is predict the potential to score 3, 4, or 5 on AP exam.  Students will be deemed: Qualified (met minimum qualification) • Pending (did not meet minimum — keep door open) • Not Qualified (did not meet minimum qualification) •

  11. HOW TO APPLY FOR AP:  Two ways to qualify for an Advanced Placement class • Automatic Qualification • Standard Qualification

  12. AUTOMATIC QUALIFICATION  Proven success in other content-area courses  Qualification criteria appears on the application  Will not be denied if qualification guidelines are met  Students do not have to go through total application process

AUTOMATIC QUALIFICATION APPLICATION PROCESS 1) Complete 1 application per class (yellow)  Available tonight, in the Registrar’s office or guidance 2) Attach a copy of your transcript  Transcripts will be distributed through 1 st period on Monday, January 11 3) Turn in application to course teacher by January 15 by 4:00pm  BMS applications should be turned in to Ms. Seabolt and will not have anything to attach

STANDARD QUALIFICATION  Evaluated on a rubric against predetermined criteria: Selected from… • Rigor of previous coursework • Content area and overall GPA • PSAT/SAT/ACT Scores • Writing, Verbal, and/or Math • Timed Writing Sample/Portfolio • AP Potential (based on your PSAT score)  All rubrics are posted on the MHS website • Student Resources>Advanced Placement

STANDARD QUALIFICATION APPLICATION PROCESS 1) Complete 1 application per class (yellow)  Available tonight, in the Registrar’s office or guidance 2) Attach a copy of your transcript and PSAT score  Transcripts will be distributed through 1 st period on Monday, January 11  PSAT scores are available via CollegeBoard 3) Attend writing sample sessions (if applicable- see application) 4) Turn in application to course teacher by January 15 by 4:00pm

AP FORMS  AP Application (yellow) • Available on stage, in tonight’s sessions and Registrar’s Office  Maximum Course Exemption Request (green) • Required if planning to take more than 3 AP classes • We recommend that a student take no more than 2-3 AP classes (3 is a full college load) • Attend meeting Friday, January 15 at 8:00am in the auditorium (zero period students have alternative meeting time listed in program) Signed form due at the meeting •

APPLICATION  Outlines criteria to automatically qualify  Pre-requisites and specified grade levels  AP Human Geography (All grades for 2016-2017, 9 th grade is by invitation only)  AP Environmental Science (9 th grade is by invitation only)  Supplemental materials required for application (writing sample or portfolio)  AP World History (writing session only required if no PSAT scores are available)  List of planned courses and current course teachers (Teachers MAY change for next year)
