Battery Energy Storage Systems

  • What is a Battery Energy Storage System?

– A battery energy storage system (battery ESS) stores energy through an electrochemical process for later use to supply the utility or local grids. – Other energy storage systems (ie flywheels) are not addressed in this presentation.

  • Applications for Battery ESS’s

– Uses include peak shaving applications, storage with renewable energy systems, etc.

Code Requirements

  • Alternative to the Code. Battery ESS’s are

alternative systems in accordance with 28-113.2.2.

  • Material Acceptance. Evaluations are performed

under site-specific review only

– OTCR2 Site-specific Application – Supporting documentation (checklist)

  • Applications. Interior and exterior applications
