Dimmer Li080

  • Dimmers are used to adjust the light intensity of

incandescent and halogen light bulbs.

  • They use the principle of phase cut (reverse + forward).
  • Dimmers only have a two wire connection to replace an
  • rdinary on/off switch.

Phase Cut

  • Forward cut = good for
  • hmic and inductive

loads

  • Reverse cut = good for
  • hmic and capacitive

loads

HID Lamp Ballast Controller

  • HID or CDM lamps are as close as artificial light can get

to real sunlight

  • HID and CDM are the artificial light source with the

highest efficacy (Lm/W)

  • They are used for galleries, museum, display, aquarium,

theater, projectors, floodlights … lighting

What are HID Lamps

  • HID lamps are high intensity discharge lamps with a

plasma burning in a halogen gas mixture

  • They require a special lamp ballast to control ignition and

power

LED Drivers

  • LED lighting has many advantages

➔ Immediate turn on time ➔ Longevity ➔ Efficiency ➔ Freedom of design

  • LED lighting is now used for all kinds of industrial and

commercial lighting applications

➔ Light bulb replacement ➔ Display Backlighting

slide-13

Why LED Drivers?

  • DC Supply => a resistor is enough?
  • AC Supply => a capacitor is enough?
  • A simple resistor or capacitor is the cheapest solution to

limit the current over the LED string

  • However, an LED driver is needed, when

➔ Highest efficiency ➔ Highest LED lifetime ➔ Full protection and ➔ Wide operating area is desired
