As a furniture designer, KIM SANG HOON’s interest in architecture has allowed him to apply the meth-
- ds and elements used in architectural ideas in
his work. In his perspective, furniture should be regarded as another dimension of architecture. In addition, his artistic vision includes creating designs that would inspire further artistic visions and potentially transpire other designs. Kim tries to expresses the beauty of space division into his works, while seemingly unstable to the viewers; the pieces are perfectly geometric in its vertical and horizontal condition. His works function as not only for dividing space but also for connecting two spaces simultaneously and possess harmo- ny and tranquility within its instability. Kim concentrates on creating difgerent perspec- tives to experience the space that we do not re- alize the importance of how much we can feel and experience through it as in air that they al- ways face. As open and closed; divide and com- bine; stable and unstable; regular and irregular; and bright and dark, he explores and attempts to address such ideas. By accommodating these difgerent characteristics into the works, he aims to express his perception of the light movement and communicate in the language of an organic form as an object. Seduced by its creative and visionary shape which brings dynamism into a room, Kim attempts to represent interactive relationship between lines and sides within the space as well as creating a feeling of movement and life with the light passing through it like the sun shining through trees. ‘Phe- nomena’ is the fjrst in a series of products in which his architectural attitude and the phenomenon of nature are expressed into the form of furniture. In reminiscent of fmuctuations of water, the curves in all the right places, the Phenomena Room Divider plays with the concept of light. The overall form mimics the movement of light and shadow while the curved sides and multiple layers allow the piece to receive and refmect light from countless
- angles. The kinetic force of light presents unique
illusions through refmection, refraction and shadow. Considering proportions and balances to divide space is the most important tool for Kim to ex- press his own way of thinking to work. Built from cut out curvy strips of wood, the piece also strikes a perfect balance between division and connec- tion, playfully inviting someone on the other side to bond with a sidelong glance between the layers. The organically fmowing object symbolizes interac- tion between the dimensions, while segmenting
- pen spaces with a modern fmair.

KIM SANG HOON, oriented in architectural thinking, creates diverse structures that suggest inter-relations of space
and light. Imagining a structure that can be recognized and defjned within a space via light, he tries to show the possibil- ities that one can be transformed into various forms and functions through the character of light. The newly created console is composed of 0.2mm paper thin steel sheets. The piled up curvy mass, each sheet cut in difgerent shapes, is another example that are expressed in his architectural language which symbolizes the relationships between bright and dark, thin and thick, and light and heavy. The organic shape refmects a soft contrast of light and shadow, simultaneously suggests its other function as a partition.

Based on architectural thinking, Kim Sang Hoon presents a mutual relationship between SPACE AND LIGHT through various forms of furniture. Kim imagines furniture as a struc- ture, which can perceive and separate space through light, and then indicates possibili- ties of transforming the structure by utilizing shades and characteristics of light. This structure distinguished with its sleek and organic silhouette is part of ‘the low table series’, newly designed in 2012. Kim tried to materialize the visually sensed forms that
- ne can catch. By stacking difgerent forms of 0.2mm thick luxsteel panels, a new mate-
rial, the artist presents the contrast of heaviness vs. lightness, stability vs. instability, and that of geometrical forms as architectural massiveness.

In reminiscent of fmuctuations of water, the PHENOMENA ROOM DIVIDER brings the movement of light and its efgect into the space. The overall form mimics the movement of light and shadow while the curved sides and layered construction allow the piece to receive and refmect light from countless angles. Characterized by its organically fmowing appearance, the piece is based on the phenomena of light as an interactive experience. The kinetic force of light causes unique optical illusions through refmection, refraction and shadow, captured by the curved sides and multiple layers. As one moves around it, the piece creates fantastic impression while segmenting open spaces solid yet trans- parent.
