insulation does not meet the current insulation standards due to it being old and laid incorrectly and a lot of insulation in existing homes has been disturbed by tradespeople. Old insulation in homes generally does not have an effective rating of R1 when R4.1 is the current standard for most of the southern half of Australia.

Common poorly installed insulation jobs we encounter and repair. Two solutions: 1. The expensive solution remove & replace with new insulation. 2. The best solution & half the cost, fill the gaps & top up to the current standard.

1. With the old existing ceiling batts laid between the ceiling joists, lay the top up batt (or preferably insulation roll) across the ceiling joists perpendicular to the path
2. This covers the ceiling joists to stop thermal bridging and a further 10% – 30% loss of efficiency 3. Top up to current standard

1. Lay thick batts or top up batts all between the ceiling joists 2. This allows thermal Bridging 3. For example R4 insulation laid between ceiling joists at 450 centres will only provide an effective insulation of R2.8 and probably a lot less than this if there are any gaps between the batts and the ceiling joists. 4. Unfortunately it is often difficult with Australian roofs to lay the batts this way due to low pitched roofs and cramped trussed roofs, especially in the presence of ducted air conditioning

1.
Make sure your roof insulation is the best it can be (we recommend our exclusive Woolcell product).
2.
Insulate your walls (we recommend our exclusive Insulbloc product).
3.
Insulate your windows with good curtains and blinds, with pelmets if necessary.
4.
Insulate under your timber floor with R2.0 polyester insulation.
5.
Block up all areas that create drafts. The above will guarantee you the most comfortable and cost effective lifestyle.

With no insulation covering the ceiling joists (see opposite) thermal bridging across the joists can result in significant loss of effective R value. For example R4 insulation placed between 450 ceiling joists can reduce the R value by 30% to R2.8!

In 1995 National Research Centre Canada tested floor- ceiling assemblies and found that cellulose increased fire resistance more than twice as well as fibreglass. The report stated: "Glass, mineral, and cellulose fibre insulations produced an increase in the fire resistance performance of 44%, 64%, and 104%." The lowest failure point for a fibreglass-insulated floor-ceiling assembly was 64 minutes; the lowest failure point for an assembly insulated with cellulose was 92 minutes.

Woolcell does not have any health warnings, contains no asbestos, fibreglass or formaldehydes and gives off no CFCs. Woolcell helps reduce ‘Sick Building Syndrome’. Woolcell does not contain any dangerous or irritating fibres unlike some glasswool/fibreglass insulation.
