Judges Hire in Overlapping Ways

  • Some still with openings for 2020 clerkships (to begin this fall)
  • Many focusing attention now or in June for 2021 clerkships
  • Some already accepting applications for 2022 clerkships
  • Thus, each applicant may have multiple rounds of apps and recs
  • They will try to consolidate recommendation requests

  • Applicants should provide you with the necessary information
  • For U.S. Supreme Court, separate online portal

Current Hiring Plan

  • Does not restrict graduating 3Ls (Class of 2020) or alumni
  • For 2Ls / Class of 2021 students applying for any year
  • “Judges will not seek or accept formal or informal clerkship applications, or

seek or accept formal or informal recommendations, before 12:00 pm EDT on June 15, 2020.”

  • Initiated by federal judges, but HLS is extending to state judges too
  • HLS is extending to 1Ls / Class of 2022 students for now

Recommendation Timeline for Class of 2021

  • Tues, May 26 – students’ judge lists and profs’ letter drafts to you
  • Week of May 26-29 – prepare recs to submit
  • Week of June 1-5 – prepare recs to submit and try to finish
  • Week of June 8-12 – continue preparing recs if needed
  • Mon, June 15, at Noon Eastern – recs to be received
  • You should submit emailed recs
  • OSCAR will release online recs automatically
