Current Mainframe Configuration

Separated into four logical partitions

  • Production z/OS operating system
  • Includes STARS, WIUP and all administrative batch processing
  • Student z/OS operating system
  • Maintained for WIU’s CS 220 and CS 230 COBOL courses
  • Test z/OS operating system
  • Testing ground for major subsystem upgrades
  • z/VM operating system (hypervisor)
  • Currently supporting 9 SUSE Linux images
  • Resource shortages on mainframe have forced a restructuring of the system

z/OS Production System

FY12 Accomplishments

Migrated operating system from z/OS release 1.11 to release 1.12 Migrated Transaction Server (CICS) from release 3.2 to release 4.2 Successfully performed a disaster recovery test at Sungard’s Chicago facility Replaced 60+ years of Production Control experience due to Marcia Blackledge’s and Fred

Combite’s retirements

z/OS Production System

System availability and throughput

Processed 1,041,581 jobs in 2011 requiring 7706 hours of CPU Increase of nearly 1000 CPU hours over 2010 STARS and WIUP CICS systems processed 58,333,120 transactions in 2011 requiring 1051

CPU hours

Decrease of 8,000,000 transactions yet an increase of 168 CPU hours over 2010??? CICS system availability over the previous 52 weeks is 99.99% (8,120.9 hours out of a

possible 8,121.25 hours)

Pentaho and Data Warehouse – FY12 Accomplishments

AIMS added two full-time data architects to the team: Jeff Brown and Brian Jarmy Worked closely with the following departments to implement business intelligence

solutions for them:

Macomb and Quad Cities Admissions Foundation and Development University Housing and Dining

We are continuing to add new features for each of these departments in addition to

maintaining our current implementation

Upgraded the Pentaho BI Server to the latest release: 4.1 Switched to using RACF credentials for Pentaho authentication

ENTERPRISE SYSTEMS

Pentaho and Data Warehouse – FY12 Accomplishments continued

Began the implementation of a Changed Data Capture solution, which will allow for

efficient ETL processing and reduce the load on the transactional database system which supports STARS and WIUP

This has been fully implemented for the Foundation Phonathon System and partially

implemented for other areas Created an internal data governance group to define our strategy for Pentaho and

data warehouse stewardship and security

Began working on an web-based method for handling requests for access to Pentaho and

the data warehouse

Pentaho and Data Warehouse – FY12 Accomplishments continued

Three team members (Jeff, Jon, and Zach) were able to attend multiple training

events, which included:

A TDWI (The Data Warehouse Institute) Conference 3 Pentaho classes – Bootcamp, PDI, and Pentaho Architect A Kimball University Dimensional Modeling

Installed and configured separate test and production Pentaho servers Began working on separate test and production data warehouse servers

Pentaho and Data Warehouse – FY13 Goals

Continue the implementation of the university’s data warehouse by expanding into

additional subjects areas within Admissions and Foundation and Development

Continue to improve our strategy for data governance and stewardship by working

closely with AIMS, our users, The Office of the Registrar, and the Chief Technology Security Officer

Finalize our implementation for a system that will handle requests for access to

Pentaho and the university’s data warehouse

Continue to expand and refine our Change Data Capture implementation Maintain the latest release of Pentaho Upgrade the data warehouse to the latest release of DB2 LUW (9.7)
