What is SMUTI?

SMUTI = Strength Monitoring Using Thermal Imaging SMUTI is revolutionary. The strength of the whole shotcrete lining can be monitored in real time from a secure position, bringing huge benefits to safety, quality control and productivity.

Why monitor strength of shotcrete?

To control the tunnelling process:

  • Know when it is safe to proceed
  • Quality control, identify problems
  • Improve productivity
  • As part of mitigation of major risks:
  • Falls of shotcrete
  • Overstressing the lining

What is wrong with the status quo?

Early Age Strength of Sprayed Concrete

  • Fall-Outs
  • Overstressing of the Lining

In either case, how do you verify the strength of the lining? The Status Quo:-

  • Penetrometer
  • Nail Pull-Out Tests

Very Local Tests May not be representative May put operator at risk Destructive Poor repeatability

Conformity testing vs strength monitoring

Strength testing of concrete can be thought of as having two distinct purposes, which are often confused: 1. Testing for conformity – i.e. does the concrete delivered to site have the properties we expect it to have, does it meet the specification? 2. Monitoring of strength development for safety of temporary works – i.e. does the concrete have sufficient strength to allow a shutter to be struck and falsework to be removed? Or for shotcrete, does it have sufficient strength to support its own weight and the ground loading?

How do we do SMUTI?

  • STEP 1: Laboratory testing
  • STEP 2: On-site calibration
  • STEP 3: Training

STEP 2: Calibration

On-site calibration tests at BSSU by Vishwajeet Ahuja

We can now use any temperature history to calculate strength Times and temperatures are input to the software and strength is calculated

STEP 3: Training

How to operate SMUTI

  • Thermal imaging camera
  • Using the app

How SMUTI works

  • Understanding of materials science
  • Upskilling the workforce

SMUTI projects

  • Whitechapel Crossrail Station 2014, BBMV JV – site trials
  • Bond Street Station Upgrade 2016, CoLOR JV – beta trial
  • ARGE Tunnel Oberau, Sept 2016 to Aug 2017, Marti GmbH
  • Qingdao Metro, China Railway Academy – trial summer 2018

Conclusions

SMUTI allows the strength of the whole shotcrete lining to be monitored continuously in real time from a secure position, bringing huge benefits to safety, quality control and productivity. SMUTI is Strength Monitoring, not Conformity Testing SMUTI is easier to use, safer and quicker than existing methods. Data is accessible, auditable and traceable. Engineers on site found the method very intuitive and easy to use. A thermal imaging camera can be used during spraying to diagnose local problems such as un- accelerated cold spots, pulsation and lamination effects.
