Behavior System: Breaks
What is the “The Nurtured Heart Approach?”
- Behavior system that supports success and positive choices.
- If a rule is not being followed, students are told to “Take a break.”
What is a break?
- A break is a short time away from the group. It is a time to reflect and think about your actions.
- We stress this is not a negative thing– they are not in trouble! It is just a time to reflect and get
themselves back on track. What if I don’t take break? Consequences (if a student refuses to take a break)
- First time: warning, discussion with student
- Second time: contact parent
- Third time: parent/teacher/student conference
This system is used in all three 5th grade classrooms! Why use this system?
- Positive attention/ positive reinforcement
- Students become more mindful
- Builds strong relationships between teacher and student
- Students are expected to read 150 minutes over the period of a week
(Monday-Sunday). Reading logs due Monday signed by a parent!
- Study for Words Their Way quizzes. Quizzes will be on their
individualized lists on most Fridays.
- Students are expected to complete assignments daily and if they finish
quicker than 50 minutes, they should refer to the extension activities in their binders.
- Please refer to teacher webpages for assignments. All 5th grade
students have access to google classrooms.
