  5. Evidence The Campaign for Grade-Level Reading, a collaborative effort among dozens of foundations, lists “..summer learning loss as one of the three major obstacles to reading proficiency at the end of 3rd grade.” (Gewertz, 2011) . Gewertz, C. (2011, July 12). States target early years to reach 3rd grade reading goals. Education Week , p. P2.

  13. What Can I Do?

  14. Start With A Plan for Summer Some structure will help…. Monday - library day Tuesday- read at the park Wednesday- snuggle read in pjs…..etc.

  15. Reading Ideas Start a summer book club: ● all ages can participate ● all read same book & discuss OR come and book talk a book you’re reading ● make it fun-meet at park; Caribou or Starbucks; library; sleepover ● encourage a “What to read next” list ● read the book then watch the movie

  16. Provide access to books Visit libraries….especially other libraries in the area: Indian Prairie, Woodridge, Westmont, Clarendon Hills, Hinsdale, Lisle…. On vacation? Find the libraries where you’re vacationing and stop in to read and explore!

  17. Keep books in their hands …. Explore Bookstores (new and used) ● story hours ● book clubs for kids and parents/kids ● teens and preteens Neighborhood Kid’s Book Exchange Free Little Library - build one!

  18. Read as a Family F un for everyone A nytime, anywhere M any minutes of quality time together I nvaluable & inexpensive L ow key & relaxing Y ear round activity to enjoy together!

  19. 20. When nothing else works- bribe them. Incentive Programs - so many available OR make up your own! Visit the PTA Website for a List of Reading Incentive Programs

  21. So many incentives

  22. It’s not, “I don’t have time”, but rather, “It’s not a priority.”

  23. Writing Ideas Just like an artist blends colors, reading and writing can be practiced together over the summer. Here are some ideas to get started...

  24. Writing Ideas Encourage any type of writing: ● letters & postcards (family, friends, teachers) ● email & blogging (family, teachers, friends, KidBlog) ● pen pal (traditional letter or email) ● storywriting (traditional or with apps like BookCreator) ● journaling (purchase a “special summer journal”) ● book reviews (write a review for every book read) ● poetry (use “mentor texts” to spark ideas - Shel Silverstein, Ken Nesbitt, Maya Angelou)

  25. Writing Ideas Writers crave an audience-create a “writers exchange or club” for the summer ● create and act out a play ● pass-along stories that everyone adds to weekly ● fractured fairy tales - rewrite favorites with a present-day twist - act them out - send to teacher!

  26. Math Ideas Summer math should be fun & engaging~ ● lemonade stand ● board games/puzzles/card games ● grocery shopping ● maps-scales, metric system vs. U.S. Standard

  27. More Math Ideas ● Working with money ● Time - telling time, elapsed time, time zones ● Cooking & Baking

  28. Even More Math Ideas District 58 Summer Math Packets Turn everyday life into a math problem: IXL access all If we want to eat summer dinner @ 5, what time should we start to cook the potatoes? Math facts practice

  29. A Bit of Advice…. Stay Positive - Please do not use Reading, Writing, & Math activities as consequences or punishment!
