slide-16
SLIDE 16

Reading Ideas

Start a summer book club:

  • all ages can participate
  • all read same book & discuss OR come and

book talk a book you’re reading

  • make it fun-meet at park; Caribou or

Starbucks; library; sleepover

  • encourage a “What to read next” list
  • read the book then watch the movie
slide-17
SLIDE 17

Provide access to books

Visit libraries….especially other libraries in the area: Indian Prairie, Woodridge, Westmont, Clarendon Hills, Hinsdale, Lisle…. On vacation? Find the libraries where you’re vacationing and stop in to read and explore!

slide-18
SLIDE 18

Writing Ideas

Just like an artist blends colors, reading and writing can be practiced together over the summer. Here are some ideas to get started...

slide-25
SLIDE 25

Writing Ideas

Encourage any type of writing:

  • letters & postcards (family, friends, teachers)
  • email & blogging (family, teachers, friends, KidBlog)
  • pen pal (traditional letter or email)
  • storywriting (traditional or with apps like BookCreator)
  • journaling (purchase a “special summer journal”)
  • book reviews (write a review for every book read)
  • poetry (use “mentor texts” to spark ideas - Shel

Silverstein, Ken Nesbitt, Maya Angelou)

slide-26
SLIDE 26

Writing Ideas

Writers crave an audience-create a “writers exchange or club” for the summer

  • create and act out a play
  • pass-along stories that everyone adds to

weekly

  • fractured fairy tales - rewrite favorites

with a present-day twist - act them out - send to teacher!

slide-27
SLIDE 27

Math Ideas

Summer math should be fun & engaging~

  • lemonade stand
  • board games/puzzles/card

games

  • grocery shopping
  • maps-scales, metric system vs.

U.S. Standard

slide-28
SLIDE 28

More Math Ideas

  • Working with money
  • Time - telling time,

elapsed time, time zones

  • Cooking & Baking

slide-31
SLIDE 31
