Goal of the Outreach Division
The goal of the Outreach Division at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry is to provide dental, dental therapy and dental hygiene students with experiences that reinforce their knowledge of the principles of delivering dental health care, while providing needed dental services to a variety of patients, including underserved patient populations, in contemporary off-site clinical settings. Such experiences also enable students to participate in community dental health education, as well as dental career promotion and inter- professional education activities.

How has your education benefited by your outreach experiences? Written by students of the School of Dentistry
While I came into the program knowing that providing care to the underserved was a priority, Outreach allowed me to sharpen my clinical skills to effectively and efficiently provide care to those in
- need. Not only did I have the chance to
spend 9 weeks becoming a better clinician, especially in the areas of diagnosis and emergency treatment, but
- ne of the Outreach sites afforded me
the chance to volunteer hundreds of hours of time, strengthening my skills at doing procedures. I am so grateful for the
- pportunity to participate in Outreach,
and know that my classmates and myself will all be better clinicians thanks to these experiences. Rachel Uppgaard (DDS Class of 2012) It has been very interesting to see the wide array of patients that come into the clinics and learn how to adequately treatment plan and provide treatment to meet their needs. I feel much more confident in my skill set and ability to care for a lot of different patient populations. Erik Solberg (DDS Class of 2012) My education has definitely benefited from my outreach experience in
- Willmar. While on outreach for one
month I was able to see as many patients that I see in three to four months at school. It allowed me to learn to work with an assistant and gave me a first hand experience of what practicing dentistry will be like post
- graduation. Outreach is definitely one of
the best professional experiences I have had in my education at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. Kevin Williamson DDS Class of 2012 My education has benefited greatly by my
- utreach experiences in Willmar and on
the MDU. I have seen more patients in one day then I do in a week at the school. My confidence was increased, my skills were sharpened, and most importantly I saw how a dental therapist was meant to and could easy fit in a real clinical setting. Almost every student, including myself, wishes they could be on outreach year
- around. Thank you for your efforts! They
are greatly appreciated. Kathlyn Leiviska (DT Class of 2012) My outreach experiences have benefited my education by allowing me to experience 4-handed dentistry, multiple EHR systems and improve my efficiency by seeing more patients daily. Sunnie Adsitt (DDS Class of 2012 Outreach has been the best experience thus far in my dental
- career. It was nice to learn new
techniques and procedures while seeing a population that truly needs the work. I felt much appreciated at the
- utreach sites I visited, and I am
fortunate to of had this opportunity. Colin Maguire (DDS Class of 2012)
