French as a Second Language Programs

  • YRDSB offers two quality French as a Second

Language programs:

  • French Immersion, which starts in Grade 1

and is an optional program

  • Core French, which starts in Grade 4 and

is mandatory

Program Overview - Curriculum

  • Standard French is taught
  • Grades 1 - 3 taught entirely in French
  • Mid-year Grade 1 students expected to be able

to express themselves in French

  • Grade 4 – 8: 50% English instruction begins;

math taught in English

  • In French Immersion, students learn French

and also learn IN French.

  • It is important that they acquire strong French
  • ral skills in order to learn to read, write and

learn science, math, etc. in French.

  • For the first few months of Grade 1, the

children do not acquire skills identical to those learned by children in an English program as the focus is on building French literacy skills to support their learning in French.

Preparation

  • Advice for Parents/Guardians:
  • Consult your kindergarten teacher prior to enrolling in FI
  • Ensure your child attends school punctually, every day
  • Ensure your child gets enough sleep and eats nutritious

meals

  • The first month may be challenging
  • Avoid discussing your anxieties
  • Communicate with your child’s teacher
  • Read to your child regularly
  • Monitor your child’s daily homework activities

Who is Roméo Dallaire?

 Roméo Dallaire, general; commander of Rwanda international peacekeeping mission: "no human is more human than any other“.  Roméo Dallaire came to Canada as a six month-old baby and spent his childhood in Montreal.  In 1970, he graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada with a Bachelor of Science Degree.

General Dallaire is the Special Advisor to the Canadian Government on War Affected Children and the Prohibition of Small Arms Distribution. Senator Dallaire has received numerous honours and awards. He is a visiting lecturer at several universities and has written several publications on conflict resolution and human rights. Since his retirement from the military, Senator Dallaire has worked to bring an understanding of post-traumatic stress disorder to the public
