MISSION STATEMENT

The Empowerment Through Education (ETE) Foundation exists to promote, support and provide educational opportunities for the children of South Sudan with a focus on girls and women.

VISION

The Empowerment Through Education (ETE) Foundation aims to empower individuals to be engines of change through education.

KEY CONCEPTS

  • Two entry/Gateways into the site from Torit Road
  • Infirmary and Library/Administration Buildings flank entry into Compound
  • Infirmary to provide basic medical care for students, staff members,

their families and the local population.

  • Potential opportunity to partner with a medical organization to run the

infirmary.

  • Library to serve as resource for school and teachers and local

residents

  • Administrative Office to include: Administrative Offices and Conference

  • Multi-Purpose Building on Axis with entry into Compound
  • Cafeteria, auditorium with stage for performances, gym, restrooms and

SUSTAINABILITY OPPORTUNITIES

SUSTAINABILITY CONCEPTS AND NEXT STEPS

  • Building Siting/Orientation to maximize solar opportunities and natural ventilation.
  • Building Design: Wall materials/Roof Forms/Natural Lighting/Ventilation/Verandas/

Roof Top Solar

  • Sustainable Building Systems: Buildings incorporating natural lighting, natural v

entilation, constructed using local materials and hand-built construction techniques.

  • Incorporate Passive Energy Strategies into buildings, including; passive lighting de

sign, passive ventilation, thermal mass and shading.

  • Clerestory lighting allows for maximum ambient light to enter the classroom

without the harsh glare and heat caused by direct sunlight.

  • Situate windows in order to maximize natural ventilation, flushing the hot air
  • ut of the classroom with prevailing winds.
  • Design the ceilings to absorb radiant heat from the metal roof, eliminating

unwanted heat gain into the classrooms.

  • Thermal mass provided by the masonry walls also helps to keep the

building cool.

  • Integration of Sustainable Agricultural practices into the curriculum. Outdoor

learning gardens will teach sustainable agriculture and nutritional practices, providing

  • pportunities for collaborative interaction extending beyond the classroom walls.
  • Solar Array Field/Power Plant Building
  • Compost/Leech Field/Bio-digester
  • Water Recycling/Rooftop Rainwater Collection: Rainwater is to be collected from

the metal roofs of the buildings, directed into a cistern, to be used to irrigate the agricultural fields.

  • Social Sustainability/Community: Actively promote discovery, self-efficiency and

strong community relationships. Covered outdoor terraces and courtyards can serve as shaded outdoor classrooms or as play areas, abutting the proposed agricultural

  • fields. Classrooms will be organized around gathering spaces of various scales

maximizing flexibility and creating safe outdoor spaces for learning, play and community events.

  • Phasing will allow the school to grow over time as it adapts to the school’s future

needs.

  • Economic Sustainability

SUSTAINABILITY CONCEPTS CONTINUED

  • Safety and Security: Secure and welcoming entry will invite the community into a

learning environment where the building is designed to teach in partnership with the school and the village community. Community input drives the design process, ensuring a school that is deeply embedded in the local culture and continued growth

  • f the village. Security walls connect to adjacent buildings with 3 gateway entrances.
