“[Transportation] is the glue

  • f our daily lives. When it

goes well, we don’t see it. When it goes wrong, it negatively colors our day… curtails our possibilities.” Robin Chase Founder/CEO of BuzzCar

} Employment is the “most direct and cost-

effective means” to achieving independence.

} But this cannot be achieved without

  • vercoming transportation barriers.

} Addressing such barriers starts w/

understanding the individual’s needs.

} Transportation solutions vary by community,

type of job, and other unique factors.

} Requires a shared commitment among

stakeholders to develop such solutions.

moved freely and easily.”

} Encompasses several modes of transportation

and movement.

} Provides access to activities of daily living. } Transcends systems and financial boundaries. } Must at least address the following questions:

  • Do I have access to transportation options?
  • Do these options meet my needs and goals?
  • Are such options affordable/feasible to daily living?

} Transportation impacts the individual’s

decision-making toward employment.

} Employment agencies cannot place clients in

jobs without identifying reliable options.

} Community transportation providers largely

struggle to serve employment needs due to medical demands and other priorities.

} Systematic priorities, such as service design

and delivery, can largely subordinate the needs of the customer.

} A custo

tomer-cente tered approach to address

  • bstacles as “empathetically, creatively, and

efficiently as possible.”

} Prioritizes the needs and experience of the

customer over other systematic activities.

} Uses a community-wide team to identify/

develop solution(s) tailored to the individual.

} Measures solution(s) based on the customer’s

experience (and unmet need).

} Facilitated by the “mobility manager.”

} The Employment First Initiative creates a

framework for Mobility Management in FL.

} Governor’s Commission recommended the

state adopt this approach to:

  • 1. Prioritize employment-related transportation;
  • 2. Facilitate collaboration btw. transportation

providers and disability support agencies; and

  • 3. Identify/resolve barriers and unmet needs.

} This can be accomplished through the state’s

Transportation Disadvantaged program.
