AHEC SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Criteria:

 Must last for a minimum of two years and culminate

in the completion of and/or graduation from a degree or certificate program

 Formal application process with defined eligibility

criteria

 New cohorts each academic year of the project

period (per AHEC center)

 Interdisciplinary curriculum with discipline-specific

points of entry, exit and objectives

 Clinical, didactic, and community-based and team-

based training activities

 A minimum of 40*hours of didactic education outside

  • f traditional curriculum

 A minimum of 40*hours of clinical education must

consist of participation in team-based training

 Placements in rural and/or underserved settings  One year follow-up is required

HRSA is requiring AHEC to create and implement a longitudinal program – AHEC Scholars - which will include interdisciplinary curricula that implements a defined set of clinical, didactic, and community-based training activities in rural and/or underserved areas for a cohort of health professions students.

Rural Scholars Program: A Model Pipeline Program Success at LSU Health Shreveport Program Office Eligibility Requirements:

  • Have a minimum ACT score of 22 and a college GPA of 3.0 or

higher

  • Be a full-time student in a college or university
  • Be from a hometown with a population 20,000 or less
  • Have been a past AHEC program participant in one of AHEC’s

youth enticement programs, including A-HEC of a Summer, Day with the Docs, M*A*S*H or the LSU Pre-Med Camp

  • And have a demonstrated commitment to return to a rural family

medicine practice in Louisiana
