Snapshot of the Research

 Language is a social process and a meaning-making system, and

grammatical structures and vocabulary interact to form registers that vary depending upon context and situation (Halliday and Matthiessen, 2004)

 Teaching about the grammatical patterns found in specific disciplines

has been shown to help students with their reading comprehension and writing proficiency.

 Instruction should focus on the language features of the academic

texts students read and are expected to write in school.

 Instruction should support students’ developing awareness of and

proficiency in using the language features of academic registers so that they can better comprehend and create academic texts (Brisk 2012;Gebhard, Willet, Jimenez and Piedra 2011; Fang and Schleppegrell 2010; Gibbons 2008; Hammond 2006; Rose and Acevedo 2006; Schleppegrell and Oliveira 2006; Spycher 2007).

Snapshot of the Research

 “Students acquire foundational skills through

excellent, carefully designed systematic instruction and ample opportunities to practice” (English Language Arts/ELD Framework, Chapter 2, p.89)

 “ELD should be planned and delivered with a specific

language objective in mind” (Saunders &Goldenberg 2008)

 “An effective approach to English language instruction

begins with an analysis of the linguistic demands of instruction and assignments” (Dutro, 2002)
