ELEVATOR ENTRAPMENTS

• Do not allow an employee or the traveling public to

remove a trapped passenger

• Contact the ACC at 767-7777 or the Airport Police at

767-3123 to dispatch emergency personnel

• If you can communicate with the trapped passengers

until emergency personnel arrive:

• Tell them to remain in the car
• Advise them that emergency personnel are on

their way

• Attempt to keep passengers calm

• Mis-leveling can lead to trips and falls

If you become aware of mis-leveling issues, contact the ACC at 7777 immediately.

ENTERING & EXITING ELEVATORS

• Never place hand, arm or leg in the path of a closing door to make it

retract Remind passengers that being patient and waiting a few seconds longer for the next elevator car to arrive is always the best policy.

• Never exceed passenger capacity

If you notice passengers “packing” into elevators, politely suggest that a more comfortable and safe ride could be experienced if a few people would be willing to wait just a few seconds more for the next car.

• Children should be accompanied by an adult and never left alone in the

vicinity of an elevator If you see people playing on an elevator or misusing it in any way, explain that there is a risk of injury and ask them to stop immediately.

NON-OPERATING ESCALATORS & WALKWAYS

• Non-operating escalators should not be used as a
• staircase. It is unsafe to utilize as a stairway.
• They may be more steeply inclined than a

standard stairway

• The tread rise does not match standard stairway

and it changes at the top and bottom of the unit

• Units not in service should be properly barricaded

and notify the ACC at 7777.

• Provide adequate signage for elevator locations

and/or direct passengers

• Pay attention when walking onto and exiting escalator to avoid trips

and falls

• All passengers should be facing forward
• All passengers should be holding a handrail
• Both feet should be placed in middle of the step and away from the

side panels or edges of the step

If you notice risky behavior, advise the passenger of the safety risk and to comply with the safety warnings posted on both ends of each unit. ENTERING AND RIDING ESCALATORS & MOVING WALKWAYS

• Promptly step off at the end of the ride
• DO NOT allow shoes to slide over comb plate
• Physically challenged passengers should not use the escalator

STEPPING OFF ESCALATORS & WALKWAYS

Keep the landing area free of anything that will distract passengers or cause them to congregate at the exit point. Make sure elevator location signs are clearly displayed. If you see passengers attempting to board your escalators using walkers, wheelchairs, canes or crutches, immediately direct them to the nearest elevator for their safety.

• Children should NEVER be transported on escalators & moving walkways in

strollers Direct passengers with strollers to the nearest elevator for the safety of their children.

• No bulky or heavy material on escalators

If you notice passengers/tenants about to transport large and bulky items on your escalators, immediately direct them to the nearest service or freight elevator for their safety and the safety of other riders.

• Shoes and sandals with soft rubber construction can be caught

between the escalator step and the side panel. An accident of this nature can cause serious injuries and is the most common accident involving escalators. Such incidents can be avoided by ensuring proper riding practices:

• Always face forward
• Always hold the handrail
• Place feet in the middle of the step away from the side panel

and back of step

• Step carefully on and off the unit holding the handrail
• Keep loose items of clothing up off of the unit

AVOID FRICTION AREAS BETWEEN THE STEP AND THE SKIRTING

• Small fingers and hands can easily be pulled into handrail inlet and may result in a

serious entrapment injury If you notice this type of behavior, advise the person to adhere to the safety warnings. Escalators

• Fingers, hands, and clothing can become caught in the gaps between moving stairs and

side walls, possibly causing personal injury and/or damage to property If you notice a passenger using the escalator steps as a place to sit, immediately advise the passenger of the safety warnings to prevent injury.

• Children should be accompanied by an adult and never left

alone in the vicinity of an escalator

• Children should ride the unit obeying all safety procedures
• Small children must be accompanied by an adult and hands

held at all times on the unit

• Do not allow children to sit on the steps
• Make sure there are no loose items that can get caught in the

unit. If you see anyone playing on an escalator or misusing it, explain that there is a risk of injury and ask them to obey the safety signage at both ends of the unit. If the misuse continues please contact the ACC at 767-7777. Escalators
