DUST IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY

  • The construction workforce in the EU countries is ~20M
  • Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS) found in varying amounts in most rock, sand

and clay. Sandstone 70% Silica, Granite 15-30%.

  • Silica major component in bricks, tiles, concrete and mortar
  • Silica now recognised as biggest Health Risk after Asbestos
  • Prolonged exposure to RCS can cause lung cancer, and lead to other serious

respiratory disease :

  • - Silicosis – usually follows exposure over a prolonged period of time
  • - Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) – a group of diseases

including bronchitis and emphysema

  • Around 4000* deaths annually due to COPD resulting from past workplace

exposures

WHY DUST IS A PROBLEM IN CONSTRUCTION

Generating Dust

Produced by many construction processes

  • e.g. drilling, chiseling, slitting,

sanding, grinding

Dust Impact Short-term

  • Visibility conditions
  • Concentration
  • Risk of injuries

Long-term

  • Respiratory diseases
  • Silicosis
  • Lung cancer

Many base materials contain hazardous material

  • e.g. silica/quartz in concrete,

mortar, bricks & blocks, wood dust in hardwood, softwood, MDF and chipboard) Health affects;

  • E.g. cancer, lung disease and

asthma for people exposed to dust in their work environment

CURRENT REGULATIONS

Work Exposure Limits (WEL)

Your maximum daily silica exposure is tiny when compared to a penny. (CIS 69, 2013) Legal workplace exposure limits for different dust types: Inhalable Dust (I-Dust) 10 mg/m3 Respirable Dust (R-Dust) 4 mg/m3 Silica (quartz) in Respirable Dust 0.1 mg/m3

UK COSHH Regulations 2002

VIBRATION DATA ALONE IS NOT VERY USEFUL

  • Easy to design for reduced vibration
  • Vibration or time?
  • Lab or site?
  • drill bit size
  • base material
  • State of repair

Do ask “How much work can I do?” Don’t ask “What is the vibration data?”
