Definition of coal dust

  • Coal dust is a fine powdered form of coal, which is created by the crushing, grinding, or

pulverizing of coal. Because of the brittle nature of coal, coal dust can be created during mining, transportation, or by mechanically handling coal.

Types of coal dust

  • 1. Inhalable/Respirable coal dust
  • Can cause Coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP or black lung disease)
  • 2. Flammable coal dust
  • Can cause explosion

Continuous Personal Dust Monitor

  • Designed to operate continuously for 12 hours, and displays three values:
  • Respirable-dust concentration for the most recent

30-minute period,

  • Average Respirable-dust exposure from the

beginning of the shift, and

  • Current percentage of the exposure limit.
