What scale are we talking about?
SLIDE 28
Scales
Laws, orders medium Conservation of clearwater lakes Brandenburg management high Conservation of stoneworts (Charales) Clearwater lake National nature conservation law low Conservation of German biodiversity Germany Habitats‘ and Bird‘ Directive, Natura 2000 Very low Conservation of European biodiversity Europe CBD Very low Conservation of biodiversity World Instrument Degree of inflexibility Target Scale
SLIDE 29 Conclusion
Inflexibility of nature conservation strategies is rather a problem
- f perception and implementation (especially in Germany) than
- f inflexible targets.
Consideration of scales is important when adopting instruments: Overall aim is to conserve biodiversity and sustainable development Specific human requirements (e.g. landscape asthetics, flood protection) as well as evolutionary potential (~ intrinsic values) must be included in conservation strategies
