  1. Do Shul Differently The United Synagogue Community Development Fund

  2. What is the Community Development Fund? • A new fund to encourage innovation • Supporting communities implement their strategic plans • Open to all US member communities • Overseen by Community Development Fund Board • Launches TODAY

  3. Why innovate? W Why now? • Communities are at the heart of what we do • Strategic Review called for us to build • Vibrant and engaged communities • Local hubs of Jewish life • It also challenged us to embrace change and take risks • US trustees are proud to be able to invest in our communities • CDF allows us to pilot new ideas and roll out the successes across the US

  4. Funding Criteria Communities will need to demonstrate that a grant will enable them to: • Grow the community’s membership over the course of the grant period and beyond • Reach out to and engage an emerging sector or a demographic group that they have not been successful in connecting to date. • Adapt to changing circumstances such as Jewish school admissions policies, new housing and decline in traditional membership

  5. Funding criteria (ctd) • Develop community leadership and a strong volunteer base • Enhance a community’s capacity for fundraising • Pilot an innovative approach to community-building that, if successful, might be rolled out to other communities • Provide additionality i.e. the grant will enable a community to achieve something that would not be possible under its current financial circumstances

  6. Available fu funds • Grants will be in the range of £5, 000 - £20, 000 per annum. • Grants likely to be awarded for a two or three year period. • Expectation that most projects will be match-funded by communities • Anticipated that 6-8 communities will be successful in their applications for new grants each year • CDF Board will ensure that there is diversity amongst the projects it approves.
