Volunteering and Charity Money raised from the event went towards Tideway’s three staff charities, as well as the Shadwell Basin Outdoor Activity Centre, which gets young people from some of the most disadvantaged communities in London onto the river every year 7
Women in Engineering 2018 In June, as part of Women in Engineering Week 2018, Tower Hamlets Guides and Brownies visited Chambers Wharf, and we visited a Brownie Pack in Bow The girls learnt that women can make a positive impact in engineering and construction - as well as taking part in some fun tasks After a quick talk about engineering and the Tideway project, the girls got stuck into lots of activities, to get them thinking like engineers. These included building spaghetti and marshmallow towers, balloon hovercrafts, lava lamps and making lemon fizz volcanoes And of course a challenge to ‘raise the bar’ which was this year’s theme #raisethebar 8

Fore resho shore re Clean ean-up up Kin ing Edwar ard d Me Memorial morial Fore resh shore ore Sit ite • Tideway East volunteers headed down to the foreshore in July to clean up plastic rubbish • The team made a great effort and were able to collect many bags full of plastic • This waste is taken away and properly disposed Plastic is a hazardous material polluting our waterways It’s putting wildlife at risk, harming and in some cases mutating aquatic life 11
Fore resho shore re clean ean-up up on th the e Isl sle e of Do Dogs s Staff volunteers, accompanied by the neighbouring Ecology Consultancy, based at Bermondsey Wall West, took to the Isle of Dogs foreshore to remove plastic waste embedded within its beach. Within the fifty bags of plastic rubbish collected they found a bag of Smiths salted peanuts with an expiry date of January 1984 - Which makes them 34 years old! Newcastle Draw Dock - August 2018 12

Tideway y 2017/18 Annual Report Significant progress has been made on the project over the last 12 months and much of it is captured in Tideway’s 2017/18 Annual Report. In the year to 31 March 2018, we hit some key milestones, with all but one of our 21 construction sites up and running, the completion of the first shafts and the welcoming of three of our six TBMs. The report highlights Tideway’s commitment to use the river and cut the number of lorries needed for the project – with nearly 420,000 tonnes of material moved by barge to date and more than 20,000 lorry loads avoided. Upc pcoming ng works ks • Cofferdam strengthening works: - Concrete piles in cofferdam to finish in October - Concrete beams tying the piles together ongoing until November. These works are tidally affected • Concrete piles on landside in October. A concrete slab will be built on top to support silos being delivered in November for ground improvement works to the main area of the cofferdam • Concrete slab to be built within the North East Storm Relief Sewer diversion. These works are tidally affected and scheduled to start in October • Ground improvement works in November for approximately 4 to 6 months. This will be deep soil mixing: a rig is used to auger down into the ground and inject and mix grout to improve the ground characteristics 26
