Bicentennial Celebration

Monroe County was created by an Act of the Indiana General Assembly on January 24,

  • 1818. Bloomington first became a settlement

about 1816 when President James Monroe selected the site for a seminary. Following the creation of Monroe County, the settlement was given the designation of a town and was platted on April 10, 1818. On what was once a wheat field, a public square was laid out with 276 feet on each side and 82 1/1 feet wide. In 2018 Monroe County and Bloomington will celebrate their respective Bicentennials with a variety of programs, events and initiatives allowing us to look back at our history, with an eye toward a future we want to leave for our children and grandchildren.
