  6. The JOURNEY… is as important as the DESTINATION ALL experiences count…

  7. It is all about the people… OR Why we Do, What We Do • Keep your eye on the prize. Litmus test : “Is it I in the best interest of students?” • Be the Visionary Leader • Be a Voracious Reader • Keep informed & keep your staff informed • There is no substitute for Hard Work/ Persistence • Always be prepared to walk away

  8. Know Your Values… Author Don Miguel Ruiz, in his book The Four Agreements - 4 principles to live by.

  9. 1. Be Impeccable with Your Word Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the Word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your Word in the direction of truth and love. 2. Don’t Take Anything Personally Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering. 3. Don’t Make Assumptions Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life. 4. Always Do Your Best Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret.

  10. POSITIVE DEVIANTS… As leaders we constantly face difficult choices that need to be made as we work to maintain access and improve student success in a sustained period of state fiscal austerity(even with Prop 30!) . In thinking about all the problems we face, it is easy to become discouraged and assign failure to the external problems. But, we can't afford to do that if California is going to chart a prosperous economic future. Each of us must be "positive deviants"-looking for points of light even with the same environmental conditions- these points of light can many times be used to turn the tide.

  11. Reputation is Everything Reputation is Everything • Don’t be Afraid to take chances • Rely on your Instincts • You are always the…<<fill in the blank>> • Photos at Events • FaceBook, Twitter, Tagging

  12. Take-aways • Don’t Be a Wallflower – if no one knows you are there, you will not be seen or heard • Be willing to take chances • Be open to constructive criticism - if it doesn’t pass the stink test… take it, but leave it alone • Find your spiritual center, your belief system-- -your moral core; and stick to it!
