YEAH… BUT ARE THEY REALLY DIFFERENT?

  • Coach vs. advisor

– Re-learn what we think we know – A coach coaches… an advisor is a director for the program

  • Some advisors are qualified to coach
  • Overlap of kids

– There will likely be significant overlap of students

  • Who may compete that doesn’t cheer at games?

CHALLENGE: SEPARATING WHAT IS NOT EASILY

SEPARATED

Your School Already Competes

  • Costs associated with competing have

been absorbed by the program

  • Decision of how much to support

financially

  • Tryouts?

– Most schools hold tryouts in spring – Competition tryouts (if applicable) will need to move to after May 1

  • Transfer rules now apply… eligibility

rules still apply

Your School Does not Compete yet

  • Start up costs

– Uniforms, mats, practice space

  • Recurring Costs

– Coaching, Choreography, music, signs, competition registration

  • Qualified Coaches

SLIDE 7

WHAT MAKES A QUALIFIED COACH?

  • Do not assume your Pep Squad Advisor is a coach.
  • Your current clearance/certification process can also be applied to Cheer

– CDE requirements

  • Certifications to look for…

– AACCA – NFHS – USASF Certifications

  • How to find a Coach

– CIF Website – Cheer Companies, like United Spirit Association, Universal Cheerleaders Association may be able to assist

slide-8
SLIDE 8

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR…

  • 18 hour-rule

– Practice for sideline cheer and games involving sideline cheer do not apply to the 18 hours, but many programs are used to exceeding this for competition.

  • No Sunday-rule

– Most California competitions have already made this adjustment – Outside of California? – no waivers will be granted

  • All-Stars

– This is considered a different activity… athletes can do it, but coaches cannot work with their same kids

  • Use of outside facilities

– Cost? Insurance?
