Pickerington High School North Graduation Requirements

In addition to the required graduation credits, students are required to take 7 end-

  • f course exams and achieve one of the following to receive a diploma:
  • Option 1: Students must accumulate a minimum of 18 points from scores
  • n their end of course exams to become eligible for a diploma. To ensure

that students are well rounded, they must earn a minimum of 4 points in math, 4 points in English and 6 points across Science and Social Studies.

  • Option 2: Students earn “remediation-free” scores in English language arts

and mathematics on a nationally recognized college admission exam.

  • Option 3: Earn a State Board of Education-approved, industry recognized

credential or a state-issued license for practice in a career and achieve a score that demonstrates workforce readiness and employability on the WorkKeys assessment.

Login Information Username: First name and Last name. All one word. OR First (space) Last

  • Ex. RobertSmith OR

Password: Your student id

  • number. (also serves as your

lunch code)

  • Trouble logging in? Put a

space between your first and last name or underscore (ex. Robert_Smith.) If this doesn’t work, let the presenter know.

Common Application

Students can find a link to the Common Application website on their Naviance Family Connection account on the Colleges tab.

  • 1. Select the “Colleges” tab.
  • 2. Select “Colleges I am applying to”.
  • 3. If you will be using the Common

Application, use the link there to go to the Common Application website and set up your Common Application

  • account. The Common Application

website is: www.commonapp.org Record your user name (your email address) and password so that you can easily return to this website. You will also need to enter your user name (same as your email address) on Naviance Family Connection to sync the two accounts.

Linking Common App to Naviance

I.) Students will need to complete part of the Common Application before syncing the Common Application with Naviance Family Connection. 1. Complete “education” section in Common App. 2. Add a college to My College 3. Access FERPA form. Select college and select assign recommenders (do not list names). This gives you access to the FERPA Release Form. 4. Click the FERPA Release Authorization, giving PHSN permission to send your transcript. Follow the instructions and click these items:

✓ I authorize every school that I have attended to release all requested records… ✓ I waive my right to review all recommendations and supporting documents… (You may choose to waive or not to waive your right to review recommendations. The right to view recommendation, if you choose to keep it, will only be applicable at the college you choose to attend.). ✓ I understand that my waiver or no waiver selection above pertains to all colleges…. ✓ You are now ready to sync the Common Application with your Naviance Family Connection Account. Remember, at this point, the Common Application is not complete. At some point, students must return to the Common Application and finish the entire application including the writing samples and then submit the application.

II.) SYNC COMMON APP WITH NAVIANCE FAMILY CONNECTION: Once logged on Naviance, the following tasks must be completed on NAVIANCE in order to move forward in applying to colleges:

  • 1. Select the “Colleges” tab.
  • 2. Select “Colleges I am applying to”.
  • 3. Enter your USER NAME for Common App (if

applicable).

  • 4. Enter your BIRTHDATE.
  • 5. Once you’ve done this correctly and you see

this, you are finished:

  • Common App Account Matching -Complete
  • Your Common App account was successfully matched.
  • FERPA Status: Waived

Completing College Applications

  • COMPLETE YOUR COLLEGE APPLICATIONS: Two places to

access the college’s application:

– College admissions website (remember that you can access nearly

every college’s website via Naviance). Nearly all colleges provide and prefer online applications.

– Common Application website, www.commonapp.org. There are

currently more than 500 colleges and universities using the Common

  • Application. It is recommended that students register to use the

Common Application now, as it will save time later.

Identifying Prospective Colleges

Select “lookup”. A popup menu called “College Picker” will appear with a list of Ohio colleges and access to the “search” option. Mark the box to the right if you have applied to this college. At bottom of page, select “add applications”.

Once in the “College Picker” popup menu, there are five ways to search for colleges & universities:

  • Default setting for College Picker list shows the most

commonly applied to Ohio colleges & universities.

  • To search for specific college, enter name of college.
  • Browse by a letter of an alphabet.
  • Browse by State.
  • Browse by country

Transcripts

TRANSCRIPTS: Colleges request that students submit an academic transcript to their college/university as part of the application process. To request that the PHSN School Counseling Office send a student’s transcript to a college or university: ✓ Complete and submit a GREEN transcript request form. (Available in PHSN School Counseling Office). Make sure its filled out completely. Fill out one for EACH college/University. Please hand the GREEN transcript request form to Ms. Chandler (School Counseling Office Secretary). It is not necessary to make an appointment with the student’s school counselor to submit the transcript request form (unless the student has questions about the process). ✓ Allow 10 school days for transcripts to be submitted. Be aware of deadlines. ✓ Progress of the application process will be visible on Naviance Family Connection in the “colleges” tab under “colleges I’m applying to”. When the school counselors have submitted the student’s transcript and accompanying forms, the status will say “Initial materials submitted”.

ACT/SAT Scores

ACT/SAT SCORES: Check to see which colleges on student’s list of prospective colleges require that ACT or SAT TEST SCORES are sent directly from the testing

  • company. Some colleges require that test scores come directly from the testing
  • company. Please understand that this is your responsibility! How to request that
  • fficial test scores are sent to colleges:
  • a. ACT: www.actstudent.org ACT will send only the score date you ask

them to send. There is a fee for this.. http://www.actstudent.org/scores/send/costs.html When you register for an ACT Test, you receive four free test score reports of that test score sent to the colleges you designate.

  • b. SAT: www.collegeboard.org SAT will send all of your SAT/SAT Subject

Scores that you select to a college for a fee. When you register for a SAT Test, you receive four free test score reports of that test score sent to the colleges you designate.

School Counselor Recommendations

  • Most colleges request that student’s school counselors submit a

recommendation, secondary school report, and school profile. – The PHSN School Counselors will complete these recommendations and forms through Naviance and will submit them electronically. It is not necessary for the student to give those forms to the counselor. – The PHSN School Counselors request that all seniors needing recommendations from their assigned school counselor provide their counselor with a curriculum vitae or resume at the time that the request is made – Allow a minimum of ten (10) school days for the school counseling department to submit the recommendation and accompanying forms. Be aware of deadlines and plan ahead.

Teacher Recommendation

Students needing a teacher recommendation should follow the following steps:

  • a. Identify the person you are asking a recommendation: teacher,

administrator, school counselor, advisor, coach, etc.

  • b. Ask for the recommendation in person.
  • c. Provide that Teacher with a Curriculum Vitae or Resume
  • d. Allow a minimum of ten school days for the person to complete

the recommendation. Be aware of deadlines and plan ahead.

  • e. PHS-North teachers have Naviance accounts and will upload

your recommendation to Naviance. Once your recommendation is uploaded to Naviance, it will be sent electronically to the college(s) you have applied.

Teacher Recommendation, Contd.

On your Naviance Family Connection Account, go to the Colleges tab and then to Colleges I’m Applying to. You can select the teachers who will complete recommendations for you from the drop down

  • menu. In the event that the teacher you have asked to

write a letter of recommendation or to complete the Common Application Teacher Evaluation is not listed there, please let one of the school counselors know as soon as possible so that the teacher can be added. Under the Colleges tab, find and select the Letters of Recommendation section.
