  • According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), more

than 33% of children and adolescents were recorded as being overweight

  • r obese in 2012.
  • In San Mateo County:

Overweight: 18.1% of children 2-4 years and 23.6% of adolescents 5-19 years Obese: 18.1% of children 2-4 years and 20.4% 5-19 of adolescents years

Overview of Built environment: Access to parks: few live with in 1/4 mile , 16% within 1/4 mile of a park incl school grounds, 0.03 acres of parks/ 100 residents, no joint use agreement Access to healthy food: most enjoy access to healthy food: a little <50% in 1/4 mile to grocery store with fresh fruit and veg, 85% within walking dist to fast food

children and adolescents watch thousands of advertisements which influence the consumption of high caloric foods and beverages that have little to no nutrition.

  • On average, children who watch TV

commercials advertising food consume 45% more snacks

  • The Academy of Pediatrics

recommends that children 2 and under do not watch television

  • Our Collaborative Mission:
  • We will support healthy weight in children and their families, across the

lifespan, in San Mateo County and increase health equity, especially in disadvantaged population. We will provide it in a culturally competent way using quality improvement data to guide our work.

  • The San Mateo County Healthy Weight Collaborative’s 5210 Health Goals and

Habits Program is a project of the National Initiative Children’s Healthcare Quality and Human Resources Services Administration.

  • HWC has made a commitment to provide national evidence based common

messaging, common assessment and care plan as well as supporting policy around built environment.
