Vision & Plan
Grade 5 Centerville took a look at this problem.....
- Project Based Learning (PBL) Unit designed, developed and
implemented by Ms. Hopkins and Mr. Melanson.
- Is there a better way for Amazon to pack material?
- What is the problem? Why should they change?
○ Waste of cardboard! ○ Bigger boxes, need more trucks...waste of energy! ○ Waste of money....
- The project: Design a box that efficiently contains a set of objects.
Present your results to the class and a panel of judges. ○ (Shhhhhh…..this was also a MATH unit on VOLUME)
Configure the objects in an efficient way...
Determine the volume required to fit the objects..
Learn about volume from various online resources...
Create a “net” or a pattern for the box...
Use the pattern to cut out the box..
Build the box!
One final group project….
Work on their group presentation...
What drove this instruction?
- A. Technology
- B. Learning how to do the math to determine volume
- C. An authentic real world type question
More Authentic = More Engagement = More Learning PS: Collaboration was another key skill practiced in this unit.
Technology ….
- Is a tool to support rigorous, personalized,
projects based instruction.
- Should be there when you need it for
learning.
Middle School Technology Plan: 1 to 1 Access
- Wireless, high speed internet capability, including outdoor
education area
- Combination of iPads and Chromebooks
- Decision needs to be based on very latest versions
- 1 to 1 model in grades 7 & 8
○
District owned - not a lease program.
- 16 devices per classroom in grades 5 & 6
- Piloting both devices in a few classrooms now
“1 to 1 devices in a classroom is a game changer” (from a piloting teacher)
Extensive Presentation & Sound
- 65” LCD flat screen monitors on carts with Apple TV
in classrooms
- LED Projectors available for classrooms
- 80” LCD flat screen monitors in MakerSpaces and
some other rooms
- Projection in both cafeterias for large groups
- Digital signage throughout the school
- Voice amplification system in every classroom
Media Maker Space
- A small studio space in the library
- Equipped with green screen and media production
equipment for student projects
- Designed by BevCam staff
- Will also support a space in library to broadcasting
meeting
Ongoing Technology Professional Development
- Teachers access to iPads and Chromebooks since 2014
○
Training offered continuously on Google and creative use of both devices
- Project Based Learning - Building teacher cohort #3 this summer
○
Makes extensive use of all technology
○
Many quality PBL units @ Middle School already
- Discovery Education for grades 5 & 6 online Science and Social Studies
○
Summer institutes and workshops offered during the school year
- Moodle LMS: Provides a digital hub for classroom resources
- All of the above (and more!): enables project-based learning for
students
