Grade 5 Centerville took a look at this problem.....

  • Project Based Learning (PBL) Unit designed, developed and

implemented by Ms. Hopkins and Mr. Melanson.

  • Is there a better way for Amazon to pack material?
  • What is the problem? Why should they change?

○ Waste of cardboard! ○ Bigger boxes, need more trucks...waste of energy! ○ Waste of money....

  • The project: Design a box that efficiently contains a set of objects.

Present your results to the class and a panel of judges. ○ (Shhhhhh…..this was also a MATH unit on VOLUME)

slide-7
SLIDE 7

Configure the objects in an efficient way...

slide-8
SLIDE 8

Determine the volume required to fit the objects..

slide-9
SLIDE 9

Learn about volume from various online resources...

slide-10
SLIDE 10

Create a “net” or a pattern for the box...

slide-11
SLIDE 11

Use the pattern to cut out the box..

slide-12

What drove this instruction?

  • A. Technology
  • B. Learning how to do the math to determine volume
  • C. An authentic real world type question

More Authentic = More Engagement = More Learning PS: Collaboration was another key skill practiced in this unit.

slide-16
SLIDE 16

Technology ….

  • Is a tool to support rigorous, personalized,

projects based instruction.

  • Should be there when you need it for

learning.
