Case Study #1 – Melinda

  • Melinda is a 28-year old single parent with two children, ages five

and three. Her long-term employment goal is to become a nurse, because she has always enjoyed helping other people. Before her children were born, Melinda held positions as an administrative assistant (2 years) and a receptionist in a doctor’s office (3 years). She has a high school degree but has not worked for almost 6 years. A recent divorce has caused her to seek a full-time job so that she can stay in the small house the couple owned. Melinda’s ex-husband is current with child support payments, but the income is not enough to support her living and vehicle expenses. She is unsure what to do next and is very distraught about everything.

CHAT ASSIGNMENT: Come up with as many I U WE Statements as possible as if you were managing this case.

Case Study #2 – Jack

  • Jack is a 35-year old unmarried ex-offender who has been referred to

your services by the courts. His work history includes a long series a low-paying jobs in the retail and service industries (stocking groceries, working in a warehouse facility, gas station attendant, etc.) as well as an 18 month incarceration for a drug-related felony. Jack dropped out of school in 11th grade, and his interpersonal skills are

  • poor. Jack claims that he is “clean” and has not used drugs for almost

2 years. He lives with his girlfriend in her apartment and relies on her for transportation.

  • Often life doesn’t go in

the direction people want it to or things don’t happen when they want them to. Does that mean their lives are doomed and they can’t achieve success that was once dreamed of?

Be realistic and remember, EVERYONE FAILS!!

Did you know…..

  • Walt Disney was fired by

a newspaper editor because “he lacked imagination and had no good ideas.” Disney went bankrupt several times before he built Disneyland. In fact, the proposed park was rejected by the city of Anaheim, California, on the grounds that it would only attract “riff raff”!!

  • Thomas Edison had some

teachers say he was “too stupid to learn anything.” He was fired from his first two jobs for being “non- productive”. As an inventor, Edison made more than 1000 unsuccessful attempts to invent the light bulb. When a reporter asked him how it felt to fail 1000 times Edison said he didn’t fail all those times, but that the light bulb was invented with 1000 steps!

slide-19
SLIDE 19

6/23/2016 19

  • Albert Einstein did not speak

until he was 4 and did not read until he was 7! His parents thought he was “subnormal” and one of his teachers described him as “mentally slow, unsociable and adrift forever in his foolish dreams”. He was expelled from school.

  • Charles Shultz, the creator of the

comic strip Peanuts, had every cartoon rejected that submitted to his high school yearbook staff!

  • Fed Astaire had his first screen

tests with the director at MGM which resulted in a 1933 memo with the following comments: “Cant sing. Cant act. Slightly

  • bald. Can dance a little.”

Astaire kept that memo over the fireplace at his Beverly Hills home.

  • The Beatles were turned down

by Decca Records wit this fascinating evaluation: “We don’t like their sound. Guitar groups are on their way out.”

Did you know…..

YOU ARE CHANGE MAKERS!

"It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change."

  • Charles Darwin

"Change before you have to."

  • Jack Welch

"People don't resist change. They resist being changed!"

  • Peter Senge

"When you're finished changing, you're finished."

  • Benjamin Franklin
