Course Requests Overview  Course sheets must be turned in to your ELAR teacher by Friday, January 17 th .  If you are moving or planning to move, you must fill it out anyway.  Both the student and parent must sign the course sheet and KAP Commitment on the back of the course selection sheet.  All students must sign up for the following courses: 1. English 2. Math 3. Social Studies 4. Science 5. PE 6. Two electives (numbered 1 and 2 per preference) and three alternate electives

  4. PROMOTION to 8 th GRADE To be promoted to 8 th grade:  You must have an overall average of 70 or higher in all courses.  You must also have an overall average of 70 or higher in 3 of the 4 core subject areas: 1. English and Reading 2. Math 3. Science 4. Social Studies Students who do not meet these requirements must either attend summer school or repeat the 7 th grade.

KAP Courses Students must meet the following criteria for KAP classes:  Have an “A” or “B” average in KAP  Have an A in the Academic Course  To move into Algebra 1-- 8 th Grade Math CBE is required  Have parent approval  Students taking KAP English must have passed the Reading STAAR  KAP Social Studies is recommended for students taking KAP English The KAP Course Commitment form is included on the back of the course selection sheet.

  9. KAP Courses KAP courses are designed to challenge motivated students and prepare them for success in advanced coursework. These courses:  typically move at a faster pace,  are academically challenging,  require more independent learning, and  require more homework than academic courses.  move faster, are more difficult, and teachers have higher  expectations. Students should:  have a positive attitude  be willing to work hard and study hard  have great organizational skills—Planner  have good study habits and good work habits  consider balancing academics & extracurricular activities  The PreAP Course Commitment form is included on the back of the course selection sheet.

  10. GT Courses  Students must be screened and identified to be eligible for GT courses.  ONLY mark a GT Course if you are currently enrolled in the 7 th grade equivalent of that course!  If you are currently being screened for GT, sign up for KAP.

Math Reading  8 th grade English &  Predetermined based on your current math Reading are combined level – for all students  Algebra I is a high  Strategic Reading school credit course – Required if you fail Reading STAAR  Math Lab – Required if you fail Math STAAR Strategic Reading and Math Lab are required if students do not meet level two standard on STAAR

INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS TAKING High school credit courses  A student whose class rank* is in the top 10 percent of the graduating class may be eligible for automatic admission consideration at a Texas public college or university. TOP  *Class rank must be based on the student’s rank at the end of the 11 th grade, middle of 12 th grade, or 10% at high school graduation, whichever is most recent at the college or university’s application deadline. 2019-2020 Course Catalog, pages 36-37 All semester grades and grade points earned in high school credit courses become a permanent part of the student’s high school transcript and are factored into the student’s grade point average and class rank.

INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS TAKING High school credit courses  A student in the Top 10% of the graduating class is eligible for automatic admission consideration at Texas public colleges and universities, with the exception of the University of Texas at Austin.  Students in the graduating classes of 2020 and TOP 2021 who rank in the Top 6% of their class are 10% eligible for automatic admissions consideration at the University of Texas at Austin. 2019-2020 Course Catalog, pages 36-37 All semester grades and grade points earned in high school credit courses become a permanent part of the student’s high school transcript and are factored into the student’s grade point average and class rank.

INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS TAKING High school credit courses  Requirements to qualify for automatic admission consideration: – Complete the FHSP + Endorsement, including the Distinguished Level of Achievement, – Earn a satisfactory ACT or SAT score, TOP – Submit the application before the college or university’s deadline, and 10% – Provide a final high school transcript verifying completion of the FHSP + Endorsement, including the Distinguished Level of Achievement. 2019-2020 Course Catalog, pages 36-37 All semester grades and grade points earned in high school credit courses become a permanent part of the student’s high school transcript and are factored into the student’s grade point average and class rank.

HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT COURSES  If you take a high school credit course in 8 th grade, you MUST NOT request the same course in high school.  You CANNOT repeat a course for which you have already earned credit.  No credit is awarded for a duplicated course. All semester grades and grade points earned in high school credit courses become a permanent part of the student’s high school transcript and are factored into the student’s grade point average and class rank.

Summary  Course Selection Worksheet are Due Friday, January 17 th to your ELAR teacher!  Talk with your parents about your choices – you must have a parent signature!  Choose 3 alternate electives – or an alternate will be chosen for you!  Keep your course selection sheet neat and clean. Take good care of it! (use a pencil)  Be responsible! Be organized! Be prepared for 8 th grade – academically and behaviorally!
