Course Learning Outcome (CLO)

CLO is simply an agreement among the faculty as to what is important for a student to know in a particular course Creating CLOs

  • Are done collaboratively
  • Could support program and/or general education outcomes
  • Across all CRNs with the same course number (e.g. WRT 101), students are

assessed with a standardized instrument in order to meet a common goal

The outcomes are agreed upon learning goals that are

  • Evaluated with a standardized instrument
  • Scored with a common key, rubric or criteria
  • Aggregated across sections
  • Examined holistically for pervasive concerns

Program Learning Outcome (PLO)

PLO is defined as an end of program learning statement(s) that are assessed with a standardized instrument(s) which demonstrate a progression of learning. It has goals that are more comprehensive than those of its CLOs. Creating PLOs

  • Are done collaboratively or defined by a third party
  • Discussed across the program

PLOs are assessed in many ways

  • Capstone experiences
  • Embedded assignments in key courses
  • Portfolios
  • Internships/field experience
  • Published or standardized tests

A program is defined as a group of courses that culminates in a degree, certificate or concentration

General Education Learning Outcome (GELO)

GELO is defined a broad set of skills that students should possess upon completion of general education curriculum

The five outcomes these skills represent are

  • Communication
