Aphylla genes in my breeding program.

Loïc Tasquier What was last year a small presentation of my first results has now become a very long list of seedlings. If you have the courage to browse through them, I hope some of these photos will give you the incentive to include these elegant wonders into your breeding programs. The main idea behind the project is to get a multitude of smaller flowers on elegant thinner stalks with a candelabra branching starting from very low. Of course, early rebloom would be a bonus. In order to achieve that, my main tools are the elegant tetraploid MTB irises with Aphylla genes first bred by Ben Hager, then Ken Fisher, Jim Craig and Vicki Craig. They have dedicated a whole life of iris breeding to bring these aphylla genes up to such a standard that we now have the privilege not to work with i. Aphylla anymore: what we’ve got to play with is much better* and I will be thankful to them forever ! More hybridizers, like Terry Aitken, George Sutton, Paul Black, Lynn Markham and Olga Wells have also produced interesting irises that I’m using too. Here are the pictures of some of the MDB/SDB/IB/MTB/BB/TB irises with Aphylla genes that I have used, the pictures of the irises they were crossed with, and the pictures of the offsprings I got from these crosses. *The i.Aphylla is a small rebloomer with slender stalks, low branching and many small flowers, a plus compared to the i.Pumila that

has only one flower at the end of it’s stalk. To make it short, by using the i.Aphylla instead of i.Pumila when crossing with the TBs they got tetraploid MTBs, with thinner stalks, smaller flowers, with a more elegant general appearance than the SDBS that often have a tendency to being crowded. It also seems to have had a great influence in the intensity of the the colours of the offsprings.

1---The first one I have used is ‘Step Ahead’: it’s leaves disappear completely in the winter, as the name Aphylla means. It is not far from the Species, still with a very advanced shape for the time! It is pod fertile.

2-Then, I’ve used ‘Elegant Lass’: it is registered as a BB, but it’s thinner stems and low branching show it has aphylla
