  • Markham uses the Ontario Heritage Act to

designate individual properties as well as entire areas known as heritage conservation districts.

  • Markham has three heritage districts

(Thornhill, Markham Village and Unionville).

43 ANA - June 13-2012

Mark arkha ham

slide-44
SLIDE 44
  • Designation offers protection against

inappropriate alterations and demolition and guides all new development affecting heritage properties and areas.

  • Using the design guidelines and policies in the

heritage conservation district plans, design review of new development applications ensures compatibility with the heritage character of the area.

44 ANA - June 13-2012

Mark arkha ham

slide-45
SLIDE 45
  • To protect heritage properties, Markham is

guided and informed by a number of heritage conservation policies and standards including those developed at the municipal, provincial and federal level.

45 ANA - June 13-2012

Mark arkha ham

slide-46
SLIDE 46

A heritage conservation district is:

  • A collection or grouping of buildings, streets

and open spaces that together are of cultural heritage value to our community.

  • An area with a special character with an

integrity of its own that distinguishes it from

  • ther areas of the community
  • A defined boundary where all properties are

protected from inappropriate changes through the use of policies and design guidelines.

46 ANA - June 13-2012

Mark arkha ham

slide-47
SLIDE 47

The purpose of district designation is to guide change so that it contributes to the area’s unique character. The key objectives are:

  • To preserve heritage buildings- these

features are fragile gifts from past

  • generations. They are not a renewable
  • resource. Once lost, they are gone forever.
  • To preserve original features - it is important

to retain original or early building fabric such as windows, wall claddings and architectural elements.

47 ANA - June 13-2012

Mark arkha ham

slide-48
SLIDE 48

The key objectives are (continued):

  • It is better to maintain than to repair
  • It is better to repair than to restore
  • It is better to restore than replace
  • To ensure new construction is complementary

and respectful - this can range from an addition to a heritage building to a new building in the district.

  • To protect features in the public realm that

make the area unique - this includes streetscapes, lot patterns and vegetation.

48 ANA - June 13-2012

Mark arkha ham

slide-49

  • Almost all of the historic urban area of

Markham now designated as part of one of the Town's three heritage districts.

  • The design review of new development

applications for compatibility with the character of the heritage districts is a major part of the heritage planning function.

  • Guideline Provisions:
  • Architectural Features of heritage buildings.
  • Alterations/Additions to heritage buildings.
  • Alterations/Additions to non-heritage

buildings.

  • New Buildings in heritage areas.
  • Commercial Features and Streetscapes.

50 ANA - June 13-2012

Mark arkha ham

  • Following the design guidelines in the district

plans, attention is paid to:

  • Scale,
  • Massing,
  • Materials, (windows, doors, details)
  • Landscaping
  • to ensure that all new development is

compatible.

Don't it always seem to go That you don't know what you've got Till it's gone They paved paradise And put up a parking lot

The e Futur ure?

Mindfully knowing what we’ve got encourages appreciation that enables us to maintain, restore, emulate and build

  • ur community heritage.

We can prevent parking lots and inappropriate buildings from detracting from our current and future historic neighbourhoods. All we need is a clear vision of our goals and the desire to work towards them.
