Hellenic History Trophy Day

Saturday, November 14, 2009

The day will be divided into three separate but related events:

1) The Hellenic History Trophy tournament. Watch 20 teams (3 high school

students each) compete by answering questions about the 3500 year long history of the Hellenes (Greek speakers). The 19 matches necessary to determine the winning team will take place in parallel and are expected to take no more than about 3 hours in total. The teams participating in the semifinal and final matches will win monetary scholarship awards.

More information at www.ahepad7.com 2) A dramatic performance of Plato's timeless classic “The Apology of

Socrates” by Emmy-award winner Yannis Simonides. Experience an unforgettable evening with Socrates. Take a seat in the court of ancient Athens as Socrates goes on trial for his life. Hear the philosopher face his accusers with wit, cutting logic, and the courage of his ideals. The performance is in English and takes about 1 hour.

Information from a previous performance at www.ncplato.com

3) The annual awards dinner honoring the winners of the Yankee District 7 scholarships, all students participating in the Hellenic History Trophy tournament, and the district award winners (AHEPAN, Hellene, and Chapter of the year). All three events will take place on the campus of Norwich Free Academy (NFA), 305 Broadway, Norwich, CT. Meeting point will be Slater Hall. Our thanks to NFA for their hospitality!

Driving directions to NFA http://www.norwichfreeacademy.com/home/directions-maps/directions-to-nfa/ Campus map of NFA http://www.norwichfreeacademy.com/home/directions-maps/nfa-campus-map/

The first two events are open to the public (no charge, no reservations needed). ALL those planning to attend the awards dinner must make reservations (contact me at 203-554-5570 or

niketes@yahoo.com by Wednesday, November 4). Dinner admission is $25 (free for scholarship

winners and HHT students).

Sponsored by Yankee District 7 of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association. The mission of AHEPA is to promote Hellenism, education, philanthropy, civic responsibility, and family and individual excellence.

Date: October 14, 2009 To: AHEPA Family Members of Region 2, 3 & 4 From: Supreme President

Re: Regional Biennial Banquet

Brothers, Sisters and Friends: In light of the current economic challenges we are all facing, it would be inappropriate to ask our members to bear the expense of travelling to Washington from across the country to participate at the Biennial Dinner. It has been determined that we will host 4-5 dinners across the country in an effort to bring the Biennial dinner to you! The first of these dinners will be in New York. The date o f the event is November 21, 2009 at the Terrace on the Park catering

  • facility. The program is shaping up to be a first class affair and we invite all of you to participate. Tickets can be purchased at

$100 each by call AHEPA headquarters, or emailing admin@ahepa.org. This year our honorees include U.S. Representative Carolyn Maloney (NY) with the 2009 Pericles Award; The 2009 Pericles Award will also be awarded to United Sates Senator Robert Menendez (NJ); The 2009 Academy of Achievement Award in Medicine will be presented to Dr. William J. Tenet: The Archbishop Iakovos Humanitarian Award will be awarded as well as the 2009 Socrates Award. Besides having all of our chapters participate at this event, we need your support. Please try to attend as a chapter and salute

  • ur honorable awardees. I am confident that your support of our Biennial dinners will be a crowning achievement for the

entire Order. To reserve a table or purchase tickets, please call our headquarters at 1-866-99-AHEPA or (202) 232-6300 and speak with

  • Maria. Thank you for your support and I hope to see you at the first of our banquets!

“United We Serve” public service campaign to combat hunger

AHEPA's "United We Serve" public service campaign to combat hunger began October 1 with a food- collection drive to feed needy children. The drive will run until December 31, 2009 and will culminate on January 1, 2010, the Feast Day of St. Basil, with chapters delivering food to local food assistance programs. The AHEPA United We Serve Poster is great for promoting your canned food drive and can be easliy printed from any color printer that prints 11"x17" copies. If your home printer doesn't support this size, don't worry. Simply take the downloaded file to any Kinkos or local copy shop (or print out this email, and ask them to go to http://www.ahepa.org/uploads/pdf/aheapuws_poster.pdf and download the file to their computer) and have them print them for

  • you. Download your free poster today!

The AHEPA United We Serve Toolkit includes easy instructions and resources for organizing your food related service projects and for communicating your success with local press outlets. Download your free Tool Kit today! AHEPA encourages the entire American Hellenic community to

  • participate. A second food collection drive, commencing February 1,

2010 and ending May, 31, 2010, will help our Veterans who are in need. Please contact your local AHEPA chapter to find out how you can help. Together, we can make a difference!
