River Chart Datum

  • The water level should be above datum approximately 95% of the time.
  • River chart datum is a sloping surface ≈ slope of river Surface at low stage.
  • Daily mean water level should “never” fall more than 0.2 m below the chart

datum during the navigation season.

Dynamic River Chart Datum

  • Monthly water level record → accurate chart datum at coastal location
  • Many years of records necessary to provide mean water level required to

determine dynamic river chart datum for lakes and rivers.

  • Chart datum varies with time, location & discharge (dynamic chart datum).

Dynamic River Chart Datum for River Nile Using Satellite Altimtery

  • Use of satellite altimetry data to bridge the gap in monitoring river Nile

water level ( technical, political and economic constraints).

  • Develop a new, rigorous and sustainable dynamic river chart datum using

recent satellite altimetry data in presence of scarce water-level gauge.

  • Most of satellite altimetry systems are related to WGS84 ellipsoid.
  • Satellite altimetry provides dense and reliable data on:

sea surface height, wave height, surface wind speed.
