AP Physics 1 Student Candidate Algorithm Based on previous student grades and standardized tests.

Performance Indicator Weight NJASK 7 MATH SCORE About 1/3 Grade 8 Science Grade Just above 1/4 Grade 8 Math Grade Just above 1/4 Which Grade 8 math course Just above 10%

The weighted sum of these 4 indicators produces the AP1 candidate index.

The 2014 AP Physics 1 Placement Test

  • Will take place during the school day in

mid-May at FMS.

  • Will test Algebra skills and mathematical

reasoning skills that are necessary for success in AP Physics 1.

  • Will include free-response questions –

students are required to “show the work and reasoning”.

  • Grade 9 physics teachers will score the

test.

What if the student does not qualify?

  • The student can be enrolled in Honors

Physics for grade 9 and may take AP Physics 1 as an elective in grade 10, 11,

  • r 12.

CHARACTERISTICS OF AP STUDENTS

Students in AP courses are expected to have the following characteristics:

  • High academic achievement and intellectual ability;
  • Self-motivation and self-discipline;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Excellent written expression;
  • Good oral communication skills;
  • An ability to work independently and collaboratively;
  • Student will complete independent work outside of

class and know that the pace of learning will be faster than in an Honors class. Students understand a high level of independent study is required on their part
