  • Following the demolition of the original bridge and careful removal of all stone to

safe storage. Work on the underwater concrete tie slab and bridge abutments was completed and the canal re-opened to traffic in early June.

  • During July and August, the concrete abutments above water have been cast ready

to receive the precast arch sections.

  • Specialist stone masons have been

cutting and re-dressing the arch ‘voussoirs’ stones and preparing walling stone ready for re-use in the new bridge. All the stone recovered from the old bridge will be used in the new structure with no new stone required.

Arch voussoirs stones

slide-27
SLIDE 27
  • On week commencing 26 September, the precast arch sections will be lifted into
  • position. This will take place over seven days with restrictions to boat movements

between 10am and 4pm whilst the arches are lifted into place.

  • Relaying of the gas, water, electricity and data services off the temporary bridge and into

the new bridge will take place in October and November.

  • Also during October and November, stone masons will reconstruct the bridge spandrel,

wing walls and arch voussoirs using the original stone.

  • The bridge is expected to be open for

road traffic in December

  • The temporary foot and utility bridges

will be removed in January

  • Following demolition of the original bridge and careful removal of remaining undamaged

stone to safe storage. The canal was re-opened to traffic in early June.

  • Access down to the canal bed for construction plant proved difficult to achieve due to the

steepness of the canal sides and the height from the nearest road access point.

  • In August and September, a temporary access ramp has been installed and pontoon

brought to site to allow construction plant to get down to the canal side.

  • Work has now commenced on installing

piles in the canal bed for the bridge foundations. This will be done in two halves so that the canal can remain open during the summer season.

Original bridge showing damage

slide-29
SLIDE 29
  • The new bridge will be all faced in natural stone replacing the former brick parapets

which were a later addition to the original bridge. Stone used in the new bridge will be mostly recovered from the old bridge with new stone being brought in where required.

  • The new bridge is expected to be opened to road traffic by the end of March.
  • The canal will be closed from

31 October to 11 March to enable underwater construction work to be carried out.
