Jesus states three examples of “habits” that ought to be done - but for the right reasons!

1) Giving to the needy “When you give to the needy...”

Matthew 6:2

2) Praying “When you pray...”

Matthew 6:5

3) Fasting “When you fast...”

Matthew 6:16 Matthew 6:2, NIV

“So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by

  • thers. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.”

Matthew 6:5, NIV

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by

  • thers. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.”

Matthew 6:16, NIV

“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.”

Jesus instructs His followers to practice these habits as discreetly and “un-obviously” as possible in order to help us be careful!

Matthew 6:3-4, NIV

“But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right

hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Matthew 6:6, NIV “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Matthew 6:17-18, NIV “But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be

  • bvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and

your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Our two-fold application:

1) Let’s practice the habits that Jesus assumes His followers will be doing!
