TYPES STANDARDS A type is a specimen of an organism to which the scientific name of that

rganism is formally attached. For plants,

they are stored in a named herbarium.

Ref: International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi and plants.

A nomenclatural standard is the herbarium specimen or illustration of a cultivar (cultivated variety) which forms a permanent record of the distinguishing characteristics of that

cultivar. Using the

standard specimen can help fix a name and act as a reference point when the application of a plant name has become confused.
