Some Sobering Statistics

  • SPIE 2016 Global Salary Report (International Society for Optics

and Photonics) ○ Of almost 7000 respondents, only about 17% were women ○ On average women earn 38% less than men

  • By region

○ Gap is worst in North America and Asia ○ Gap isn’t as bad in Europe, Latin America/Caribbean, Oceania

  • By employer type

○ Gap is worst in not-for-profit orgs and company/corporations ○ Women actually make more than men in civilian government!

  • By Years Employed

○ Gap is MUCH smaller for early career respondents ○ Women leave the field or just don’t advance
