What it takes to turn a challenged athlete into a Rower Des Moines Rowing Club - Adaptive Membership Initiative
First you have to find people brave enough to try anything once and trust the experts to take care of them.
Next you need to find people who have faith in your project and are willing to finance the equipment needed for training athletes.
You need outreach into your community to find both volunteers and athletes that want to share the love of rowing
Rowing For All In 2014 Des Moines Rowing Club envisioned making rowing on the Des Moines River and Gray’s Lake available to military veterans as well as other athletes who have physical challenges. In 2015 we adapted our first boat and found our first two rowers. In 2016 we were gifted a single shell from Mark and Ann Baiada that was designed for adaptation. Later that same year we received funding from the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation for a double adaptive shell the we acquired in 2017. With the amazing generosity of the Spinal Cord Injury Association and the Storey Kenworthy Foundation for Giving that same year, we were able to purchase a second double shell. These two double shells allowed us to offer Adaptive Learn To Row Days as well as include Para-Rowing at our club’s annual regatta, HOTDM, in 2017. In 2018 we held a dual-para-regatta at Gray’s Lake. In 2019 we will take delivery of a single racing shell gifted to us from SFG & the Jaye McKinnon estate.

WinTech Fixed seats cost $614. Plus $45. for brackets that connect them to the erg. An Indoor rowing machine is used to strengthen muscles and develop technique when training or when rowers are not able to get into a boat. $1,000.
Per USRowing Regulations: A 1.5hp motor costs $1,000. All novice adaptive rowers must be accompanied by a motorized launch for safety. This jon boat costs $1,150.
Miscellaneous Needs to safely get our athletes into a boat and onto the water: Blue Ocean megaphone $525. NK StrokeCoach GPS $400. Roho Cushioned Seat $475. Innovative Lighting Bow lights $20. First Aid Kit $25.
Patriot Docks Straight Roll-In Dock with Poly Decking is priced at $3,861 for 40 feet which would be used at our local regattas, to make boat launches easier for our rowers.
