High performance = 3 marks Words are spelt accurately 99% of the time. Capitals, full stops and commas are used accurately 99% of the time. Other punctuation marks are also used accurately 99% of the time, such as question marks and semi colons. Paragraphs are always shown clearly by leaving a line between them. Sentences make sense and flow together well due to the use of punctuation and connectives. Key subject words are always used correctly. Intermediate performance = 2 marks There might be some spelling errors in the writing, but these are not that frequent. Capitals, full stops and commas are used accurately most of the time. Other punctuation marks are also used accurately most of the time, such as question marks and semi colons. Paragraphs are normally shown clearly by leaving a line between them. Sentences are clear and make sense due to the use of punctuation and connectives. Key subject words are normally used correctly. Threshold performance = 1 mark

  • Although there are quite a few spelling errors, it is still possible to understand what has been written.
  • Capitals, full stops and commas are sometimes used properly. There is not much accurate use of other

punctuation marks.

  • Paragraphs are not always clearly shown by leaving a line between them.
  • Sentences are written clearly enough to show meaning, but they are not well connected.
  • A few key subject words are used.

Task: Explain the scientific processes that occur when an ice cube melts. Success criteria:

  • Identifies the states of matter involved in the process
  • Describes, using diagrams, the structure of the states of matter
  • Refers to the physical properties of the ice cube during the process
  • Links the physical properties to the structure
  • Discusses the role of energy in this process

Grades / Levels

  • For Year 7 and 8 we are sticking with levels for the time being.
  • These are the grades your child has achieved throughout years 1 to 6.
  • Levels go from level 1 up to level 8 and are broken into three parts A, B

and C with A being the highest.

  • The current level will be based on teacher assessments, tests, classwork

and homework. It is a “snapshot” of performance as it is now.

  • The predicted level is the level the teacher expects the student to

achieve if they continue to work at the same rate.

  • The target level has been generated by the College based on Key Stage

2 attainment or baseline tests for each subject.

How can I support my child’s literacy?

  • Make space and time for reading for pleasure (library visits,

book tokens, Amazon vouchers, magazines). Keep a note of this reading in the reading log in your child’s planner.

  • Purchase/borrow a copy of the ‘conflict’ novel your child is

studying: ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’, ‘War Horse’ or ‘Private Peaceful’ – you could read the novel too and discuss it with your son or daughter.

  • Encourage your child to write at home – from shopping lists to

diaries to their first novel – all writing is helpful.

slide-45
SLIDE 45

Achieving Excellence Together

How can I support my child’s literacy?

  • Have a family ‘screen free’ meal at least once a week, and talk

to each other about your day, your opinions or whose turn it is to load the dishwasher!

  • Keep a dictionary handy for homework.
  • Encourage your child to proofread all homework, for every
  • subject. Common mistakes:
  • capital letters and full stops;
  • paragraphs;
  • spelling their/they’re/there correctly.

Science year 7 current topics

Curriculum: Year 7 have started a new five year curriculum for GCSE success. It focuses on the mastery of the Big Ideas:

  • Force
  • Cells
  • Energy
  • Particles

Each topic focuses on forming links between the Big Ideas by students working out implications of their learning and practical investigations.

slide-49
SLIDE 49

Achieving Excellence Together

Science year 7 current topics

  • In each topic students demonstrate their development
  • f practical enquiry skills.
  • After each topic students will complete a keyword

definition and recall task, checking their revision skills.

  • They will also complete an extended progress
  • bservation opportunity in which they get to

demonstrate their understanding. Developing literacy skills.

Science year 7 current topics

What has been covered so far?

By the end of term 1 all students will have completed an introduction to cells, particles and forces.

slide-51
SLIDE 51

Achieving Excellence Together

  • Students can be supported during homework tasks where

they are asked to learn key word definitions.

  • Students should be able to recite the definition of the 20 key

words for each topic they are asked to learn.

  • Activities to support this:

– Students give the definition when told the key word – Students give the key word when told the definition – Challenge your child to explain anything in technology or nature using their knowledge of the Big Ideas; use the news for inspiration of topics

Attendance

The link between attendance and achievement in school: Increasing your attendance raises your chances to achieve.

Research suggests that 17 missed school days a year = 1 GCSE grade drop in achievement.

That could be the difference between a Grade 4 and a Grade 5 in Maths or English

Attendance

  • Looking in more detail:
  • 1 school year at 90% = 4 weeks of lessons

missed, that is 100 lessons missed

missed.
